BLOOMFIELD ? The Fairfield softball team busted loose for 25 runs to pick up its first two wins of the season in a doubleheader vs. Davis County Monday.
The Trojans won the opener 14-2 in five innings before battling to an 11-6 win in the nightcap.
In game one, Haley Grunwald pitched all five innings to earn the win. Grunwald struck out three and gave up two earned runs on three hits in the complete game.
At the plate, the Trojans opened the season with three runs scored in the first inning and another six in the third. McKenzie McClure went 3-4 with one RBI, Madison Roberts hit a three-run double and Karley Williams came through with another three RBI.
?Overall, it was a good first game,? said head coach Bob Bradfield. ?The pitching went pretty well, but we probably need to shore up the defense a bit.?
In game two, Fairfield found itself down after one inning, but it stormed back after adjusting to a new, slower pitcher. The Trojans, down 5-4 after four innings, pushed the game wide open in the fifth inning with four more runs.
Roberts continued her timely hitting in the nightcap by crushing a three-run home run and adding five RBI to her season total. Williams, McClure and Katie Anderson also tacked on two hits each, with Williams driving in an additional three runs.
Fairfield pitchers Jolea Burkhart and Alli Deao combined to allow three earned runs in six innings of work.
