Fairfield takes care of Keokuk for fourth time
Trojans down Chiefs in first round of 3A Substate 5

FAIRFIELD — Fairfield baseball squared off with Keokuk more than any other team this season, four times to be exact.
The Trojans played the Chiefs three times through the regular season and once more on Friday night in the pairs 3A Substate 5 first round matchup.
Fairfield defeated Keokuk all three times in the regular season and kept that narrative up in the postseason clash as the Trojans downed the Chiefs 13-1.
Keokuk started off on the right foot, taking an early 1-0 lead in the first, but it didn’t last long.
In the bottom half of the first, Fairfield was scorching in the box.
The Trojans quickly erased the one run deficit with five runs in the their half of the frame.
A two RBI double from Caden Allison gave the Trojans all they would need to win it, but they never let up.
Luke Konczal followed Allison with a double of his own, scoring an additional two runs to push Fairfield’s lead to 4-1. Nate Konczal closed out the inning with an RBI single to make it 5-1.
Keokuk never had an answer.
In the second, a throwing error to first gave Cason Miller a free spot at second. A single from Dain Burkhart put runners at the corners and then a sac fly from Tallon Bates made it 6-1.
Another wild throw, this time on a throw from home to second, scored another Trojan run.
After shutting the Chiefs out once again in the top half of the third, the Trojans followed with their biggest inning of the night.
Back-to-back singles from Nate Konczal and Aidan Kreuter got Fairfield going.
A past ball later scored Konczal and a bases-loaded walk from Luke Konczal made it a 9-1 ballgame.
The biggest hit of the evening came in the next at-bat as Aiden Westercamp brought three runs across home plate with a three RBI double, to bring the score to 12-1.
The game came to a close an inning later as Tallon Bates posted another RBI.
Cason Miller, Caden Allison Nate Konczal and Aiden Westercamp all had two hits. Westercamp had a team high five RBIs.
Allison and Bates each finished with two RBIs. Luke and Nate Konczal each had one RBI.
Fairfield moves to 22-11 with the win. The Trojans will take on Davenport Assumption (25-13) in round two.
