EDDYVILLE ? Haley Grunwald kept Eddyville-Blakesburg?s hot bats in check, and the Fairfield softball team won the first game of a doubleheader against the Rockets Friday.
With Grunwald on the mound pitching all seven innings, the Trojans won 4-3. Grunwald struck out eight batters and allowed three runs for her second win of the season.
?Haley?s eight strikeouts is either a personal best or really close to one,? said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield. ?She had a good game and the defense played well behind her.?
Trailing 3-2 in the opening game, Fairfield overtook the Rockets with a two-run sixth inning. Sydney Burnett knocked in the tying run with a double and then scored on a wild pitch for the go-ahead score.
Madison Roberts led from the plate going 2 for 4 with a double and run scored. Marisa Repp was 2 for 4 and Burnett scored two runs.
Behind the plate, Repp threw out two baserunners on attempted steals.
The Trojans then dropped the second contest 15-5, making three errors in the first inning as the Rockets jumped out to a 12-0 advantage.
Although the Trojans ?came out flat,? according to Bradfield, they bounced back with their own big inning to score five runs in the top of the third.
?The good thing about that second game is we did battle back, and we could?ve kept chipping away,? said Bradfield. ?For whatever reason we didn?t get much going and they scored three more runs in the fifth inning for the 10-run rule.?
MacKenzie Flattery was 1 for 2 with a double, and Roberts went 1 for 3 with a double and two RBI. Jolea Burkhart started the game for Fairfield, and Flattery and McKenzie McClure both worked in relief.
Next up for Fairfield (2-1) is a home contest vs. Washington Thursday.
