The Trojan boys? tennis team received just enough from doubles duo Matt Burnstedt and Aidan Bachar Thursday to knock off Mount Pleasant in Fairfield.
The Trojans needed just one doubles win to clinch the meet after winning four of six singles matches to open. They got the win, but it didn?t come easy.
Burnstedt and Bachar fell behind by a set in their No. 3 doubles match before pushing the contest to a third-set super tiebreaker. Ultimately, the duo previaled 10-7 in the tiebreaker and handed Fairfield a 5-4 meet win.
The meet was Fairfield?s first win of the season after rain left Fairfield tied with Keokuk 3-all in Tuesday action.
Fairfield wins in singles play came from freshman freshman Alexander Punj at the No. 1 spot, No. 2 Sean Soupiset, No. 4 Tommy Price and No. 6 Aidan Bachar.
Punj topped Caleb Zimmerman in two quick sets ? 6-0, 6-1 ? and Soupiset, a junior, followed suit with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Price pulled out a 10-8 third-set super tiebreacker for a win, while Bachar won another super tiebreaker, 10-7, at No. 6 singles.
Mount Pleasant won No. 2 doubles in similar fashion to the way they lost the No. 3 contest. The Trojan duo of Soupiset and Kevin Thorn had three match points in the match but couldn?t convert, dropping their third-set super tiebreaker 10-8. The Panthers also won No. 1 doubles.
Up next for the Trojans (1-0-1) is a Monday matchup at Ottumwa.
