FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield volleyball team kicked off its 2021 season with its annual home quad, and the usual suspects were present — Hillcrest Academy, Eddyville-Blakesburg and Albia were in attendance.
The Trojans went 2-1 on the day, picking up a pair of sweeps over Albia and Hillcrest. The Ravens were 0-3.
The first round of the day saw a big win for Fairfield. The Trojans began the night with a dominant 21-13, 21-12 win over Albia.
“These girls can come in with excitement and keep it,” said Trojan head coach Diana Drish. “It was a lot of fun to see them come out of the gate fast.”
Fairfield then lost a three-setter to EBF, winning the first set 21-13 before falling 21-11 and 15-6.
The Trojans closed the night with a 21-7, 21-14 victory over Hillcrest.
The Ravens were swept by EBF at the beginning of the night and took a two-set loss to Albia. Head coach Brandon Statler said he still saw good signs in his squad, which played against three bigger schools.
“I thought our team defense was really good,” Statler said. “Our reads were a little bit off, but I thought our team defense was really good, and they fought hard.”
EBF posted a perfect 3-0 to win the quad. Albia finished 1-2.
