FAIRFIELD — It took every inning of Tuesday night’s rain makeup game for the Fairfield baseball team to stave off visiting Washington.
The Trojans locked up the 2024 Southeast Conference title with a 2-1 win when Luke Konczal delivered a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Fairfield got things going in the Southeast Conference series finale. Cason Miller was hit by a pitch as the leadoff. He would eventually make it all the way home as single from Dain Burkhart and Tallon Bates loaded the bases.
In the fourth spot, Caden Allison drew a walk after being hit by a pitch, which scored Miller.
Both teams went scoreless through the second and then it was Washington’s turn.
After back-to-back out to begin the third, Blayze Richardson drew a walk and stole second.
In the next at-bat, Kale Williams hit a single up the middle and it was enough to score Richardson, tying the game at 1-1.
Through the fourth and sixth inning neither team could break the tie. During that span, just one runner from either team made it to third as the defenses were stout.
Then in the seventh inning after holding the Demons without a run, the Trojans got the run they needed.
After a nice defensive stand by the Demons, which culminated in two quick outs to begin the bottom of the frame, Caden Allison caught a break.
An error a short put Allison on base and Konczal delivered. With two outs and Allison at first, Konczal drilled the walk-off RBI double to right center propelling the Trojans to victory.
Konczal and Tallon Bates each had two hits for the Trojans. Konczal and Allison each had an RBI.
Kael Williams had three hits for Washington. Luke Beenblossom and Conner Leyden had two hits each for the Demons as well. Beenblossom had one RBI as well.
