Sigourney-Keota, Mt. Pleasant, WACO all in action

IOWA CITY — Four area wrestling teams battled in the Iowa City Regina Invitational on Saturday. In a tournament that featured 13 schools, Fairfield was the top Union area team, finishing fifth place.
The Trojans scored 136 points on the day. Fairfield had two winners and two second-place finishers.
At 113 pounds, Cael McCabe picked up two pins on the day to take the bracket. McCabe pinned Tipton’s Michael Puffer in 1 minute, 37 seconds to win his semifinal bout, and took down Brock Nebergall of Lone Tree in 4:25 in the championship.
Dain Burkhart won three matches to win the 175-pound bracket. Burkhart picked up a pin in the quarterfinals and a decision in the semifinals to make the championship. Burkhart outlasted Iowa City Regina’s Leren Fernandez 5-3 to win the bracket.
Carter Moore took second place in the 190-pound bracket. Moore had three wins en route to the championship bout, including a pair of pins.
Dre Smithburg was second at 215 pounds. Smithburg had two pins on the day, and just narrowly fell in the championship match, falling to West Branch’s Quintyn Rocha via tiebreaker.
Sigourney-Keota finished seventh place, scoring 87 points. The Cobras had just one Top-3 finish, as Jake Moore took second at 165 pounds.
Moore had a pin and a decision on his way to the first place match. He lost the 165-pound championship to West Branch’s Cooper Gates, who won by pinfall.
Mt. Pleasant scored 78 points to finish right behind Sigourney-Keota, in eight.
Landon Beckler finished second place at 106 pounds. Beckler won his semifinal match in just 14 seconds but fell by pinfall in the championship, dropping a match to West Branch’s Ethan Humphrey.
Lane Beckler was third in the 126-pound bracket. Beckler had two pins on the day, including a pin over WACO’s John McLaughlin in the third-place match.
William Birdsell took third place at 215 pounds. Birdsell won three matches by fall, including the third place match, where he defeated MFL MarMac’s Nolan Lerch in 2:44.
WACO finished 11th place, scoring 28 points. The Warriors didn’t have a Top-3 finisher, but McLaughlin finished fourth at 126 pounds, going 2-2.
