Fairfield’s Allen named to 3A All-District first team
Trojans named two, Mt. Pleasant two and Washington one to 2023 Southeast list

The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association released its 2023 All-District baseball lists last week and in Class 3A’s Southeast region, Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant and Washington all earned distinctions.
The Southeast Conference had a total of five selections on this year’s list as Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant each finished with a pair of players on the list, while Washington ended with one.
Leading the SEC this season is Fairfield senior shortstop and pitcher Tate Allen.
Allen is the lone SEC player to grace this year’s first team list, making it as a utility.
The SEC Player of the Year was one of the top pitchers in the area and led the Trojans on the hill, compiling a 5-2 record.
He finished with earned runs average of 2.03, on 45 hits, 17 runs (14 earned) and 57 strikeouts. Allen held opponents to an average of .245.
At the plate, Allen also hit .316 tallying a team-high 28 runs, 31 hits with 17 RBIs and 36 walks.
Also for the Trojans on the All-District lists, is junior Tallon Bates with a second team selection.
Bates hit .315 through the season while posting 28 hits, 27 RBIs and 24 walks.
Bates also did quite of bit of pitching for the Trojans. He threw in nine games, with an ERA of 3.42. Through those nine, opponents batted .172 against him as he gave up 20 hits, 24 runs (15 earned) with 31 strikeouts.
As for Mt. Pleasant, senior Zerek Venghaus earns a spot on second team as a utility.
The first team All-SEC selection batted .371 in his final high school season, tallying team-highs in runs, 21, and hits, 26, with 12 RBIs. He was also earned 15 walks.
On the hill, Venghaus threw in nine games and finished with an ERA of 2.07. He allowed 23 hits, 18 runs (eight earned), while strikingout 22.
Junior Ben Newton earns a second team nod as a pitcher for the Panthers as well.
Newton finished with a 3-3 overall record in nine games started.
With an ERA of 1.36, Newton gave up 39 hits, 37 runs (nine earned) with 37 strikeouts against 219 opponents. The opposition batted with an average of .178.
At the plate, Newton hit .229. He finished with 16 hits and 12 RBIs.
For Washington, the lone All-District pick comes in the form of shortstop Ethan Patterson.
The senior led the Demons with a batting average of .329 and finished with a team-high 25 hits with 14 runs and seven RBIs.
