Fairfield’s Hollander named All-Union captain
Washington leads 2023-24 list with four total selections follow by Mt. Pleasant and the Trojans

With Iowa girls high school basketball now in the rear view and Southeast Conference basketball complete, it means it’s now time for another annual All-Union big school girls basketball list.
It was yet another action packed SEC season, which saw Keokuk take the conference crown. Fort Madison finished second followed by Burlington, Washington, Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield.
On this years All-Union list there are a plethora of talented players represented from the area’s trio of teams in the Trojans, Panthers and Demons.
This time around, Washington leads the way with four total selections, which includes the coach honor.
Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant each have two players named to the list with the Trojans earning the 2023-24 captain honor.

Coach: Shannon Rugg, Washington
Washington girls basketball has only gotten better in recent years and that’s in large part to the guidance of leading man Shannon Rugg.
Over the past three years, each of Rugg’s squads have improved their win total. Back in 2020-21 the Demons finished with just three wins. This year, the Demons notched eight wins, finishing the season at 8-13. That’s their highest win total since the 2019-20 season.
The Demons also got better in conference play. Washington finished SEC play at 5-5 good enough for fourth place. That matched the Demons conference record during the 2019-20 season as well. Washington was just two games off competing for second in the league.
Captain: Savannah Hollander, (12), Fairfield
Leading the way as Captain of the All-Union girls basketball squad Fairfield senior Savannah Hollander.
Hollander was the Trojans go to scorer in her senior season and frankly one of the best in the SEC, finishing with a conference third best 16.0 points a game average.
Along with her bucket getting, she also led the Trojans in rebounds, assists and steals, averaging 6.3, 2.5 and 4.2 in those three categories. All three of those lines were good enough for top five in the SEC with the seals ranking second.
Hollander was stellar in the shooting column, finishing with a field goal percentage of 47.9%, good enough for second in the conference, and a three point percentage of 37.5%, the second highest in the league.
Hollander was efficient at getting to the line as well, knocking down a SEC second best 3.2 free throws a night. She led the league in foul shot percentage at 73.3%.
Adalyn Long, (10), Washington
Washington sophomore Adalyn Long continued her fantastic early career in 2023-24, leading the Demons in scoring once again. Although Long’s season was cut short due to injury, the guard still made her mark.
Playing in just 11-of-20 games on the season, Long averaged 12.2 points to lead Washington. That mark ranked fourth in the conference. Despite missing the second half of the season, Long still ended with the second most points, 157, as well as field goals made, 42, and three pointers made, 18.
She also hit a team high 32 free throws. Long also notched 3.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists, second highest for the Demons.
Defensively, Long was one of the best on the Demon’s roster as well. She finished second in both steals per game and blocks, averaging 2.5 steals and 0.4 blocks. Long’s steals and assists numbers ranked fourth and fifth in the league.
Abby Carthey, (10), Mt. Pleasant
Mt. Pleasant Abby Carthey is one of two Panthers on the All-Union list.
Carthey came into her own in her sophomore season turning into one of the most reliable scorers for the Panthers. As a freshman, Carthey averaged just 1.2 points a game.
Through 21 games, Carthey led the Panthers with 8.8 points a game. She also tallied 3.5 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.0 assists.
The first year starter was the best in the conference at getting to the foul line. Carthey averaged a conference best 4.7 free throw attempts per game and connected on 3.3 a game to top the list.
Carthey’s 70.4% free-throw line ranked third in the conference.
Kendall Hinrichsen, (11), Washington
Washington junior Kendall Hinrichsen stepped up her game in 2023-24, taking on a starting role for the Demons.
A year ago, Hinrichsen averaged just 3.5 points. This season, Hinrichsen improved that tally, averaging 7.9 points, while racking up a team high 157 points. While playing in all 20 games, Hinrichsen averaged 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists, second most for the Demons. Her 39 total assists were a team high.
On the defensive end, Hinrichsen had some quick hands, averaging a team high in steals as well, 2.8 per game and 55 total. That steals average was third best in the SEC.
Faith Jones, (10), Fairfield
The second of Fairfield’s selections is sophomore Faith Jones.
Jones improve a lot in the 2023-24 season after playing lower minutes as a freshman. The second year player started all 20 games for the Trojans and was second in nearly every statistical category.
Jones averaged 6.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals a night. All those number were second best for Fairfield.
She was one of two Trojans to reach double digit scoring on the season, finishing with 120 points. She also pulled down 100 rebounds, dished out 40 assists and swiped 26 steals.
Addison Miller, (10), Washington
A new face on the varsity roster this season was sophomore Addison Miller. Miller played like a seasoned vet, assisting the Demons in all categories.
Despite starting just one game for the Demons, Miller was often a spark off the bench. Playing in all 20 games, Miller averaged with a third best 6.0 points per game, along with a second best 3.9 rebounds. From beyond the arc, Miller was one of the Demons top shooters, leading with a three point percentage of 29.5%.
Miller scored 119 points total in her second season and hit 18 threes.
Juliana Burns, (12), Mt. Pleasant
Mt. Pleasant senior Juliana Burns came into her own in her final season, solidifying herself as an inside threat coupled with some midrange prowess.
Burns played in 20 games for the Panthers in 2023-24, finishing with a points per game average of 4.6. That was good enough for second on the Panthers. She also pulled down an average of 3.4 rebounds per game.
With much of her work coming from around the rim, Burns closed with a field goal percentage of 35.2% In all, Burns hit 31 shots on the season and made the second most free throws at 28.
