BURLINGTON ? Spencer Peterman set down 16 batters via the strikeout and hit a home run for good measure Wednesday to lead the Fairfield baseball team past Burlington Notre Dame 12-3.
The Trojans used a steady diet of home runs and key two-out hits to score every inning but the last, eclipsing the 10-run mark for the third straight game. Sophomore Kooper Dahlstrom and Tyler Cooksey, a junior, also smacked homers for the Trojans.
?The hot hitting continued tonight, with several Trojans with multiple hits,? Fairfield head coach Josh Allison said. ?One goal tonight was to put runs on the board early and often, and the boys responded to the challenge.?
Senior Corbin Harwood was the first to score for Fairfield, crossing home plate thanks to a single by Josh Dimmitt in the top of the first inning. Dahlstrom singled home Dimmitt and then scored on a Joe Hietpas double later in the inning to hand Fairfield an initial three-run lead.
Fairfield?s big day from the plate continued into the second frame, as Harwood hit an RBI double and later scored on a throwing error, and Hietpas knocked in Dahlstrom with a double. Peterman, who allowed one earned run on two hits for the win, broke the game wide open in the third with a two-run dinger.
Fairfield added four more runs to their final tally in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Dahlstrom blasted a two-run homer in the fourth, Brent Buch scored on a fielder?s choice in the fifth and Cooksey added a solo shot in the sixth.
Peterman finished 3 for 4 from the plate with two extra base hits and three RBI, and Dahlstrom was 2 for 4 while driving in three runs. Harwood finished 2 for 3, including a double, and Dimmitt scored twice.
The Trojans (7-11, 4-4 SEC) now find themselves riding a three-game winning streak, which is the squad?s longest positive stretch of the season. The Trojans had lost five in a row coming into the week.
Next up for Fairfield is a makeup game against Pella Christian Friday.
