MORAVIA ? With a brand-spanking new golf course under their feet the Fairfield boys? golf team came home with rave reviews of The Preserve golf course on Lake Rathbun. They also came home Tuesday night with a comfortable 164-215 dual-meet victory against Eddyville-Blakesburg. The Preserve opened their nine-hole course in September of last year and the full eighteen last month.
?The Preserve at Lake Rathbun is going to be a great course. A little Spirit Hollow with fescue, Cold Water with Link style holes and Bos Landen with tight up and down fairways in the design,? said head coach Mick Flattery. ?Definitely a place where the state tournament will be held.?
The Fairfield golfers ripped through the course, especially Derek Byrnes who shot a 39 on his way to varsity medalist honors and played consistent throughout. A birdie on the par-five first hole set him up for a round of 39.
Behind Byrnes came several golfers that were one below-average hole from being right up there with him. Kyle Menke and Davis Lowenberg each shot a 41 followed by Cody Kool with a 43. Those three all played rounds good enough to be in the 30s, but helped Fairfield to the victory nonetheless.
?I thought our guys played pretty well on a very wet course that played a lot longer than normal. Also, a course that we have never seen,? Flattery said. ?We played the par fives really well as five out of six guys played them at even par.?
