COLUMBUS JUNCTION — An extremely hot Friday night ushered out the 2021 racing season at CJ Speedway. Humid conditions created an extra challenge for the drivers as the unusually wet air made for a heavy fast track all night long.
Tyler Heckart debuted a new Huston Brothers Trucking IMCA Sportmod a few weeks ago and has been a front-runner with the car that he purchased from Derrick Stewart. Heckart scored his second win of the season at CJ by topping a field of 20 drivers in the 15-lap feature.
Heckart took off from the outside front row and led the main event flag to flag. Trey Rock has been running in the top five consistently, and Friday night saw the 7T of Rock turn in another fine run in taking second ahead of Colton Livezey.
Dallon Murty finished second to his father, Damon Murty, one week ago in the Mincer Ford IMCA Stock Cars. The younger Murty was not going to let that happen two weeks in a row as the second generation driver led the 20-lap feature flag to flag in scoring a car length win over his father. Corey Strothman took third.
Over the course of 20 laps, Kurt Kile found the top side to his liking to triumph in the Stewart and Son Fuel IMCA Modifieds. Kile shot out front at the drop of the green flag to finish ahead of a hotly contested battle for second between Dakota Simmons and Jarrett Brown. Simmons held off Brown by a half car length at the checker ed flag.
The Midwest Towing IMCA Sport Compacts feature victory went to Darin Smith. Smith drove his No. 27 car to a comfortable win ahead of Cody VanDusen and Shane Barnes in the 12-lap main event.
Rick VanDusseldorp notched the 10-lap feature win in the CJ Auto Parts/NAPA Stores Hobby Stocks by holding off constant challenges from Aaron Martin.
Although it was the final Friday racing of the year, one more race remains on the schedule. The annual “Turkey Dash” on Saturday, Nov. 6, will feature a full night of competition as the racing season in Eastern Iowa comes to an end.
