WASHINGTON -- Cow tongue, it isn't just for eating.
Apparently it makes for a nice game of football.
The local Fellowship of Christian Athletes had 45 kids playing Cow Tongue Football Sunday at Case Field.
'We tried playing Cow Tongue Football our first year, back in 2017, and it was a hit, so we're continuing the tradition,” FCA sponsor Kust Levetzow said. Levetzow is also an assistant coach for the Washington Demons football team.
Cow tongue football is basically a version of ultimate football, however, an actual cow's tongue is used in lieu of a traditional football.
'The idea was presented to us as an ice-breaker game from a former FCA Education Coordinator during mandatory training that Coach Kelly Williams, Coach Nic Williams and I went through in order to get certified as an official FCA Huddle here at Washington High School.
Levetzow said Sunday's kickoff at Case Field, under the lights, went extremely well. The students were split into four teams of 11. Two games were then played simultaneously.
'One rule we added is that the cow tongue needs to be passed from boy to girl or girl to boy and so on. That way everyone stays involved,” Levetzow said. 'A large number of touchdowns were scored by various female athletes and as gross as handling a cow tongue may seem, no one was shying away from getting involved in catching and passing.”
At the end of the night, hand sanitizer was provided before snacks were eaten.
Student leaders then led a small group bible study.
The FCA has upcoming get-togethers, whether its Sunday night Large Group Huddle or Tuesday morning bible studies, students will be going through a series called 'Creation to Christ” as well as studying through simplified stories Jesus used to teach important biblical truths called the Parables.
The cow tongue games were just the kickoff for the FCA Huddle for the year, so there will be many opportunities for any students interested to become involved.
Upcoming activities for FCA include: Sunday, Sept, 22, from 7-8 p.m., another Large Group Huddle will meet at the Washington High School softball field for games, snack and bible study; Wednesday Sept. 25, 7:30-7:55 a.m., there will be a ”See you at the Pole” prayer session, meeting at the flag pole near the high school entrance); Tuesday, Oct 1, 7:15-8 a.m., Coach Justin Chambers old classroom, small group bible study.
This years student leaders are: Luke Turner, Abby Voss, Taylor Brinning, Evan Horak, Josie Tanner, Ava Turner, Greta Rothe, and Kasen Bailey.
