FHS wrestling hands out awards
The three wrestlers that ranked highest for Fairfield in wins and team points were honored with Most Valuable Wrestler recognition at the Fairfield wrestling banquet Tuesday night.
285-pound Michael Smithburg led the way in both categories with 32 wins and 126 team points and shares MVW honors with Dakota Simmons (125) and Logan Metcalf (215).

The three wrestlers that ranked highest for Fairfield in wins and team points were honored with Most Valuable Wrestler recognition at the Fairfield wrestling banquet Tuesday night.
285-pound Michael Smithburg led the way in both categories with 32 wins and 126 team points and shares MVW honors with Dakota Simmons (125) and Logan Metcalf (215).
Metcalf was a senior captain with four varsity letters to his name and now shares the 10th highest win total in Fairfield history (78) with Jordan Bradfield. The state qualifier earned the Iron Man award for not missing a practice while posting a 30-6 record on the season.
Simmons placed seventh at last month?s state meet to become the 32nd Fairfield wrestler to make the state tournament podium. The junior finished with a 31-5 record and was also awarded the Darwin K. Potter Award for dedication and determination.
Smithburg tallied his team-leading 32-6 record on his way to an Innocent Back award for not being pinned once the entire season.
Bradfield was also a team captain for the Trojans while senior Ryan Brewington was given the Jordan Smith Perseverance Award after making a late season run to the state tournament. Brewington also set an FHS all-time record with 63 escapes on the season.
Junior Jeff Guttry earned the Leadership as well as the Innocent Back awards. Aaron Gevock picked up the Billy Stoner Freshman and Rookie of the Year awards. Junior Ethan Cox and freshmen Josh Dimmitt and Ammon Shaner also reeled in Iron Man awards while more Innocent Back awards went to Cox, Dylan McClure, Matt Burnstedt and Alec Stoner.
As a team, the Trojans finished with a dual record of 7-3 (2-2 SEC) en route to qualifying three to the state meet.
