Final football rankings released

There was worry before the season started that Union area big schools Mt. Pleasant, Washington and Fairfield got a bit of a tough draw when it came to Class 3A Districts heading into the 2023 season. The final Gazette football rankings prove those worries were justified.

Four of the Top-6 teams in the final Gazette Class 3A poll were either in District 4, which featured Washington and Mt. Pleasant, or District 5, which hosted Fairfield.

Solon and Williamsburg, which appeared in District 5, are ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in Class 3A. The Trojans had their fare share of Trojans against those two powerhouses, falling 56-14 and 42-6. Those games were sandwiched by Fairfield’s 20-7 win against North Tama.

Out of the District 4 teams, Mount Vernon comes in at No. 4, and Davenport Assumption is ranked No. 6.

Washington had the privilege of playing Assumption and Mount Vernon in back-to-back weeks. Assumption took down the Demons 35-0, and Mount Vernon won 65-6.

Mt. Pleasant fell to Mount Vernon 76-14 in the district opener. The Panthers then ended district play with a 56-0 loss to Assumption.

The final Gazette poll was only Class 3A, Class 4A and Class 5A. Area teams appeared in the final poll for the small schools last week, as Winfield-Mount Union and WACO were Ranked No. 1 and No. 10 respectively in Class 8-Player, and Sigourney-Keota was No. 6 in Class 1A.
