FORT DODGE — Two No. 1 seeds, two No. 2 seeds and a No. 8 seed were crowned victorious at Harlan and Hazel Rodgers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge last week, as the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union welcomed five more champions into the lore of the state softball tournament.
In Class 1A, it was Clarksville that reigned supreme. The No. 2 seed in the tournament knocked off No. 1 seed Wayne, 4-1 in the finals. The top-seeded Falcons defeated Highland in the quarterfinals.
In Class 2A, it was Van Meter that scored a walk-off state championship. The Bulldogs beat second-seeded West Lyon, 8-7, in the final. West Lyon is the team that eliminated Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division Louisa-Muscatine in the semifinals.
The Class 3A championship was won by Williamsburg, which was the third-straight title for the Raiders. After knocking off Washington in the quarterfinals, second-seeded Williamsburg took out No. 3 seed Albia 9-1, and No. 1 seed Wahlert Catholic 3-2 to earn another title.
Class 4A was the wildest of the five tournaments, and eighth-seeded Pella wound up with the championship trophy, beating No. 3 seed North Polk 4-2.
The Class 4A saw three first round upsets, including Pella’s stunning 5-1 victory over top-seeded Xavier.
Class 5A was much more chalky, with only one upset in the winner’s bracket. Top-seeded Waukee Northwest won a pitcher’s dual against second-seeded Linn-Mar by the score of 1-0.
