Final quarter fuels Fairfield

An incredible fourth-quarter comeback by Fairfield High School in a home Southeast Conference girls basketball game highlighted area scores Thursday.
Fairfield 47, Ft. Madison 46
The Trojans came out slow and were down 18-5 after the first quarter, 29-19 at halftime.
'We fought to get back into the game, but were still down 43-29 going into the fourth quarter,” FHS coach Jeff Miller said. 'Shay Drish took charge and got the rest of the team behind her and we rallied back gradually in the fourth quarter.”
The Trojans outscored the visitors 18-3 in the final frame.
With 5.4 seconds left in the game, Danielle Breen grabbed a missed offensive free throw and was fouled while shooting.
'Danielle was calm and cool and made both free throws to put us up 47-46,” Miller said. 'Ft. Madison threw the ball inbounds and drove up the court but was unable to get a shot off. It was an incredible comeback and important conference win for us. The girls on the bench also did an excellent job of getting the girls pumped up throughout the fourth quarter.”
Drish finished with 24 points on 10-for-17 field goals. She had eight steals, seven rebounds and three assists. Destiny Gridley scored 10 points.
Fairfield is 8-6 overall, 5-1 SEC. The Trojans play host to Albia tonight, then Washington Tuesday.
Mid-Prairie 51, Camanche 29
In this River Valley Conference game at Mid-Prairie, Colby Rourke came off the bench to lead the Golden Hawks with 12 points. Maddie Nonnenmann added 10 and eight rebounds.
Mid-Prairie is 6-10, 5-10 and plays at Washington tonight.
Highland 52, Columbus 33
At Columbus Junction, the Huskies improved to 5-16 in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division game. The lead for Highland was 13-6 after a quarter, 24-15 after two and 43-18 after three.
Alyssa Brase poured in 18 points in the win and Jenna Sands added 13. Brase had 14 rebounds. Kayla Cerny put up seven points and took down nine rebounds.
Olivia Carrier had 10 rebounds and seven points for the Wildcats.
Pekin 45, Louisa-Muscatine 36
The Panthers (11-4, 9-3) won the North home game behind 15 points from Sophie Wittrock, and 12 each from Emilee Linder and Kerrigan Pope. Pope added 11 rebounds and Wittrock five assists.
The Panthers led 13-11 after the first quarter and 23-17 at halftime. It was 29-22 starting the last stanza.
Highland 60, Columbus 33
The Huskies boys team are 16-2, 12-2 with the North road win as Mason McFarland scored 25 points and Cole Adamson added 12. Zack Lasek nailed the boards for 16 rebounds.
Eric Valdez notched 18 points in the loss.
No. 4 Camanche 70, Mid-Prairie 33
The Golden Hawks fell to 3-12, 3-11 with the home RVC loss.
Ethan Trimpe had 12 points in the loss.
Hillcrest 59, Winfield-Mt. Union 44
Eli Ours was on fire early, hitting four treys to spark Hillcrest to a 20-11 lead after one quarter.
Pekin 75, Louisa-Muscatine 37
The Panthers upped their record 13-3, 13-1) with the home North win.
Brady Millikin and Brayden Sobaski each went for 14 points in the win while Nick Tshudy hit for 16 and Kennan Winn 11. Dayne Eckley had eight rebounds and seven points.
