It is the final week of the regular season, two weeks earlier than in the past due to the revised scheduling created to dampen teams affected by the coronavirus.
The playoffs are starting next Friday, Oct. 16 for most teams. Some schools have chosen not to enter the playoff pool. Instead, opting to play another team of similar skill as a final regular season game.
Twin Cedars (0-4) and Melcher-Dallas (1-5) have elected to play each other in Class 8-man as a final game and not enter the playoffs.
'I've had administrators tell me that, for the bottom teams, there's no sense in traveling 90 miles to go get beat bad when they can go 10 miles for the same result,” Iowa High School Athletic Association assistant director Todd Tharp said.
The playoffs will consist of 16 pods of two, three or four teams and 10 teams get first-round byes in Classes 3A, 2A, 1A but A will have five byes and 8-Man none.
Byes and home sites will go to the teams that performed best with the opportunity to play at home through Round 4.
Teams will be rebracketed into four brackets of four teams apiece, for the third round (Oct. 30) and the quarterfinals (Nov. 7).
