MT. PLEASANT — It’s safe to say there was a lid on the rim on Friday night, when the Mt. Pleasant girls basketball team took on Ft. Madison in Southeast Conference play, at least in the first two quarters of action.
The Panthers scored just seven points in the first half of play and never recovered, falling 52-30 in their first conference home game of the season.
The Panthers were stifled by some tough Bloodhound defense, which made it difficult enough to even get a shot off in the first 16 minutes of play.
Ft. Madison led 18-2 after one quarter and 35-7 at halftime, running away with the contest before the third quarter even started.
“We were really timid to start the game, and Ft. Madison really brought it to us,” said Mt. Pleasant head coach Curt Watson. “With their physicality, we didn’t match up, and we thought we did a lot better job in the second half.”
The Panthers, in fact, would go on to outscore the Bloodhounds in the last two quarters, though not by enough to make the game in doubt. After going 9-9 in the third quarter, the Panthers outscored Ft. Madison 14-8 in the fourth.
Kynlee White, Haylay Lydolph and Avery Fedler each scored five points in the loss to co-lead the squad.
Abby Carthey and Elodie Rawson each scored four points in the loss. Myah Starr had three. Paityn Ensminger and Bella Dodds each had two.
Mt. Pleasant fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play with the loss.
