Five Union area teams victorious in Week 3
WACO, Mid-Prairie win on homecoming

Week 3 football festivities saw homecoming action for Mid-Prairie against fellow Union area team Sigourney Keota, while Van Buren County matched up in a clash against Cardinal. WACO continuted its excellent start to the season with Class 8-player and Class A District 5 play in full swing.
Here is how the Union area small schools did in under the lights in Week 3.
No. 7 Mid-Prairie 28, Sigourney Keota 0
The Golden Hawks bounced back from an upset loss to Alburnett with a shutout win over the Cobras on homecoming. Brooks Weber completed 14 of 20 pass attempts for 206 yards and three touchdowns.
Hudson Ehrenfelt had 5 catches for 92 yards and a score through the air. Kaden Kos and Carson Humphrey were also on the receiving end of Weber TD passes. Defensively, Mid-Prairie forced two fumbles, including one by Jack Sorrell, who also had a pick-6.
Mid-Prairie (2-1) will head back out on the road for a matchup against Wilton at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
Despite not finding the end zone, Sigourney Keota’s Ike Molyneux had another strong game on the ground with 115 yards on 24 carries.
The Cobras (0-3) will look to bounce back in their own homecoming game against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Friday.
Van Buren County 29, Cardinal 12
VBC got its first win of the season with a victory over the Comets Friday. The Warriors had a huge day on the ground with 365 rushing yards. Seniors Kayden Simmons had 185 yards and two touchdowns and Cale Mellinger racked up 110 yards and a score.
Warriors quarterback Will Cocherell completed 5 of 15 passes for 79 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass to Jace Duncan. Duncan also had 2.5 tackles and an interception on defense.
VBC (1-2, 0-1 A-5) next faces Danville in a Class A District 5 matchup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at VBC High School.
Cardinal quarterback Alijah Frase completed 13 of 27 passes for 189 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Treyton Hafele was Frase’s primary target and finished with six catches for 103 yards and two scores.
The Comets (0-3) return home in search of its first win of the season. They face Regina Catholic at 7 p.m. Friday at Cardinal.
WACO 48, HLV/TC 7
The Warriors kept it rolling on homecoming with a blowout win over HLV/TC. WACO’s offense was powered on the ground with 367 rushing yards and six touchdowns.
Hayden Shelman led the team with 152 yards and two scores. Niles Reichenbach also passed the century mark with 121 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. As a team, the Warriors averaged 6.8 yards per carry.
WACO (3-0, 2-0 8-player-5) will face Fremont-Mills in its next game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Central Decatur High School.
Winfield-Mt Union 28, English Valleys 26
Winfield-Mt Union overcame a 14-0 first quarter deficit to pick up its first victory of the season Friday. Wolves quarterback Cody Milks led the way against the Bears with 18 completions for 201 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Milks also scored a TD on the ground and had an interception on defense.
Nicholas Sparrow had a receiving and rushing touchdown for Winfield-Mt Union. Max Edwards racked up six catches for 74 yards and a touchdown through the air. Tayson Samuels also had a pick for the Wolves defense.
Winfield-Mt Union (1-2, 1-1 8-player-5) will look to get to .500 when it faces Wayne for its homecoming game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Pekin 52, Wapello 14
Pekin has now scored 160 points through its first three games after dismantling Wapello in a Class A District 5 clash. The Panthers racked up 315 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Senior Nolan Glick led the way 225 yards and three scores.
Riley Smith went a perfect 8 of 8 through the air for 128 yards and two touchdowns along with 75 rushing yards and a TD. Smith found Reed Lauderman for a 13-yard score while Alijah Brock had three catches for 74 yards and a TD.
Pekin (3-0, 2-0 A-5) has a week off before its next game. It was set to face Highland on Friday before the Huskies canceled a pair of games due to limited player availability. Pekin will next play at home against VBC on Sept. 26.
Danville 26, Columbus 14
Columbus headed into halftime tied 7-7 against Danville, but the Wildcats were unable to generate enough offense in the second half and dropped to 1-1 in Class A District 5 play.
Senior Angel Ineichen had the best game on offense for Columbus with 116 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries. Rey Resendez-Rodriguez scored Columbus’ other TD.
Columbus (1-2, 1-1 A-5) will look to bounce back against North Linn. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday at North Linn Football Field.
