The Fairfield eighth-grade girls basketball team left Burlington with a victory in ?A? action Thursday, remaining undefeated with a 32-22 win over Edward Stone.
The Trojan girls took a 22-10 lead into the locker room at halftime and survived a rough Edward Stone in the second half.
?I was just glad we got out of there without any serious injuries. It was ugly, but our girls kept their cool in a game where it would have been very easy to lose it,? said coach Derek Philips.
?To be playing at the level we need to be playing at, we need to cut down on unforced turnovers and finish our shots. If we would have done those we would have won by 30. Still nice to get out of there with a win, though,? the coach added.
Sam Fritz led all scorers with nine points, Haley Beard had seven and Mikaela Lunsford dropped in five points. Kylie Kurtz and Kaylee Watson both scored four points, Brooke McLain chipped in two and Kenady Waugh tacked on one point.
The ?B? game was the same story, but with a different result, as the Trojans lost 19-17. Fairfield built a 6-0 lead out of the gates and held a two-point advantage at halftime, but the visitors couldn?t hold on.
?We had unforced turnovers and missed some layups. We played hard, but just couldn?t hold the lead,? Philips said.
Kailey Kaska led the Trojans with seven points while Natalie Angstead scored six. Maggie Ferrel, Kylee Marlay and Sarah Swanson all chipped in two points.
The Trojans? next game is Monday at Burlington?s Aldo Leopold.
