The Iowa High School Athletic Association has released the 2025-2026 high school football districts, and it’s a lot of good news for fans who were opening to see Union area teams square off in the next two campaigns.
The area’s teams span over five classes; 3A, 2A, 1A, A and 8-Player, and in every class, all Union teams ended up in the same district.
Class 3A, District 4 has all Southeast Conference teams besides one. Mt. Pleasant, Washington and Fairfield and land in the same district for the first time in 5 years, and the three local big schools are joined by familiar faces Fort Madison and Keokuk, along with Solon.
In Class 2A, Mid-Prairie will play in District 6. The Golden Hawks are joined by Central Lee, Mediapolis, West Burlington-Notre Dame, West Liberty and Wilton.
The area’s two local Class 1A teams will both play in the same group. District 6 includes both Cardinal and Sigourney-Keota, along with a few semi-familiar faces in Durant, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Louisa-Muscatine and Iowa City Regina.
Class A District 5 is the Union area’s most common group. Columbus, Highland, New London and Pekin are all in District 5, which is full of Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division teams.
Danville and Wapello join the group, meaning the Danville-New London football rivalry will pick up after a 10-year hiatus. The last time the Tigers and Bears went at it in football was the 2016 season.
Class 8-Player only has two Union area teams now, after New London’s move back to 11-man football. WACO and Winfield-Mount Union will both be in District 5, alongside Belle Plaine, English Valleys, HLV, Iowa Valley and Lone Tree.
Teams in Class 8-Player will play five or six district games in each of the next two seasons. Teams in Class A, 1A, 2A and 3A will all both play five district games.
