Football preview: No. 2 WMU, No. 5 WACO set to clash

No. 2 Winfield-Mt. Union (2-0) vs. No. 5 WACO (2-0)
One of the most anticipated games of the season is Winfield-Mt. Union facing off with WACO.
Both squads come in undefeated and ranked inside the top five of the 8-Player rankings.
Thus far both squads have picked up wins over ranked opponents in their first two games.
WMU enters after a 78-16 victory over New London and WACO downed Iowa Valley 46-22 a week ago.
The Warriors have gotten the better of the Wolves the last two seasons, picking up a 43-0 win last year.
No. 10 Columbus (1-1) vs. Lisbon (2-0)
Columbus will be looking to stay on the winning track this week when its host the Lions of Lisbon.
After a week one loss to Mediapolis the Wildcats bounced back with a dominant victory over Wapello 49-6.
Meanwhile, Lisbon comes in undefeated with shutout victories over Durant and Louisa-Muscatine.
Last season, the Wildcats handled the Lions 49-20.
Mid-Prairie (0-2) at Sigourney-Keota (1-1)
Mid-Prairie will hope to get its first win of the season on Friday night against Sigourney-Keota.
As for the Cobras, this week is about staying in the winners column.
SK, who began the season as the No. 4 team in 1A, fell to PCM in its first game of the year.
The Cobras turned it around in week two though in a big way. They shutout No. 8 (Class 2A) Mediapolis 21-0.
As for Mid-Prairie, its looking for a win after losses to Wilton and Regina Catholic.
A year ago, it was a narrow, 23-20, victory for Mid-Prairie.
Pekin (2-0) vs. Danville (1-1)
Pekin hopes to improve to 3-0 this week with a victory over Danville.
So far, the Panthers have beaten Cardinal and Van Buren County.
Danville enters after a loss to Lynnville-Sully and a victory over Highland.
This will be the first meeting between the two since 2016. Pekin is currently 3-0 against Danville.
Cardinal (0-2) at Davis County (0-2)
Cardinal’s still looking for its first win of the season after a pair of losses to kick off the year.
Davis County is in the same situation.
Cardinal has scored just two points in its pair of games against Pekin and Central Lee.
Davis County was defeated by Chariton and Centerville.
A year ago, the Mustangs got the better of the Comets 16-6.
New London (0-2) at Iowa Valley (2-1)
New London hopes to find a win this week as its takes on Iowa Valley.
The Tigers have fell to Easton Valley and Winfield-Mt. Union in their first two games.
Iowa Valley started out 2-0 after wins against BGM and Lone Tree, but the Tigers were upended by WACO last Friday.
New London won big over Iowa Valley in 2022, 74-40.
Van Buren County (0-2) at Highland (0-2)
Either Van Buren County or Highland will walk away from the football field Friday night with its first win.
The Warriors suffered losses from Central Lee and Pekin through two weeks, while the Huskies lost to North Cedar and most recently Danville.
It’s been since 2017 the last time VBC and Highland have squared off. Highland won that matchup and is 5-0 in all meetings.
