Football rankings: WACO returns to the rankings

Another September week gone and another list of 2023 Iowa high school football rankings released by The Cedar Rapids Gazette.

It was yet another eventful Friday night of action, but not much changed from last week as Winfield-Mt. Union still holds the No. 2 spot in 8-Player.

Sigourney-Keota returns to the No. 10 spot in 1A and WACO moves up one spot from out of the rankings into No. 10 in 8-Player.

Winfield-Mt. Union (5-0) comes into week six off another dominant performance against English Valleys. The Wolves dropped 74 on the Bears for a 74-6 victory.

Nothing seems to be slowing the Wolves down as of now.

They will travel to Iowa Valley (4-1) on Friday for a matchup with the Tigers.

Iowa Valley has won two straight and its only loss is to WACO.

As for WACO (4-1), it enters the week off a dominant performance itself.

The Warriors took care of business last Friday, taking down Easton Valley 56-14.

That notches back-to-back victories for WACO, since the lone season loss to Winfield-Mt. Union.

The Warriors will head to New London (1-4) this week. The Tigers enter off their first win of the season.

Sigourney-Keota (4-1) had to scratch and claw for everything it had on Friday night against Pleasantville.

The Cobras escaped the game with a 31-24 overtime win. They came into the contest as favorites and a tight contest may have moved them down two spots.

Sigourney-Keota will take on Pella Christian (4-1) on Friday. The Eagles come in off two straight wins.
