Football roundup: WMU makes a statement

No. 4 (8-Player) Winfield-Mt. Union 44, No. 3 (8-Player) Central City 36
WMU and Central City was one of the most highly touted games to open the season across the state and it lived up to the hype.
The Wolves and Wildcats were tied at 8-8 after one quarter of action, but WMU outscored Central City 20-16 in the second quarter and would never lose the lead the rest of the way out.
Jake Edwards went 11-for-19 with 212 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. He also rushed for one score as well.
Cam Buffington rushed for 186 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries in the game. He also reeled in three passes for 81 yards and three scores as well, bringing his total touchdowns to five.
Carter Loyd (39 yards), Cole Milks (44 yards) and Abram Edwards (48 yards) all caught at least two passes as well.
Defensively, Buffington led the way with 15.5 tackles and one fumble recovery.
No. 10 (8-Player) WACO 26, No. 7 (8-Player) Fremont-Mills 20
WACO picked itself up a statement win on Saturday night as the 2022 state runners-up edged fellow top 10 opponent Fremont-Mills to begin the season.
The Warriors and Knights were tied 6-6 after one, but WACO was able to win it after scoring six unanswered in the second. The two squads each ended with 14 points between the third and fourth.
Pekin 20, Cardinal 2
Pekin scored all 20 of its points in the first three quarters of its Friday night match against Cardinal.
The Comets were able to get the safety early on in the contest, but that’s all they could muster through four quarters.
Will Adam led Pekin with 149 passing yards on the night. Adam also finished with 48 yards rushing and two scores.
Sven Dahlstrom rushed for 74 yards and one touchdown. He also had six receptions for 71 yards.
Robert Brown had 70 yards receiving as well on two catches.
Defensively, Alton Williams and Cal Miller each had 7.5 tackles. Henry Adam had one interception as well.
(2A) PCM 22, No. 4 (Class 1A) Sigourney-Keota 15
Sigourney-Keota had the game in its hands at the half. The Cobras held onto a 15-7 lead, but the Mustangs went on to shutout SK in the second half, while scoring 15 themselves.
Sawyer Stout finished with 36 yards passing for the Cobras on just nine attempts. Stout also ran for a team-high 67 yards. Issac Bruns and Kale Clarahan each had over 40 yards rushing as well.
Cole Kindred caught one pass for 37 yards.
Defensively, Jake Moore finished with 6.5 tackles in the loss.
Central Lee 35, Van Buren County 8
Central Lee led VBC 28-0 at the half on Friday night and the Warriors just couldn’t make up the difference.
VBC put eight on the board in the third, but that’s all they would get.
North Cedar 38, Highland 6
Highland found itself down to North Cedar 20-6 after two quarters of action on Friday.
Highland did as much as they could to limit the Knights in the third and fourth, but the Huskies could never find the end zone themselves.
Wilton 13, Mid-Prairie 0
Mid-Prairie did well to limit Wilton on the offensive side of the ball, but the Beavers played exceptionally well on the defensive end as well, holding the Golden Hawks to a shutout.
Brady Weber finished with 114 yards passing for the Golden Hawks. He also rushed for 50 yards.
Hudson Ehrenfelt ran 19 times for 85 yards.
Receiving wise, Ehrenfelt led the way with 57 yards on four catches. Cobi Hershberger ended with 27 yards on four catches.
Defensively, Kaden Kos notched a team-high 13.5 tackles.
Easton Valley 61, New London 22
New London was right with Easton Valley through one quarter.
The Tigers trailed just 14-8 after one, but the River Hawks went on to score 24 unanswered in the second, seven in the third and 16 in the fourth.
