Former Washington head football coach Chuck Henry will be inducted into his former high school?s football Hall of Fame tonight in Boyertown, Pa.
The ceremony will take place at halftime of Boyertown High School?s football game with rival Pottstown. Henry and his son, Charlie, left yesterday to attend the ceremony.
?I feel pretty honored, no doubt about it,? Henry said of his induction into his alma mater?s Hall of Fame.
Henry played running back and outside linebacker for the Bears, earning three varsity letters. He started as a sophomore, and said the highlight of that season was a win over Pottsville. Another highlight of Henry?s career, he said, was defeating Spring-Ford in the final game of his high school career on Thanksgiving Day in 1961.
?We were about .500 every year, so we weren?t great,? Henry said. ?We played in a pretty good conference. Most of the teams we played were in the Philadelphia area.?
After graduating from Boyertown High in 1962, Henry attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa to play football, and he was a three-year letterman while playing running back for the Statesmen. He was inducted into the William Penn athletic Hall of Fame in 1987.
Henry then stayed in Iowa and began his coaching career at Denison. After one year there, he moved on to Albia, where he spent three years. Then he took over as Sigourney?s head coach, leading the Savages to the Class 2A state championship in 1979. Finally, he spent 15 years as the Demons? head football coach before retiring in 2006.
Henry, who was a history teacher before retiring, still substitute teaches in the Washington School District.
?It keeps me busy and keeps me out of trouble,? he said.
