A tough second quarter doomed the Washington girls? basketball team on Tuesday night.
Washington only picked up two points in the second frame against Fort Madison, as they fell to the Bloodhounds 56-40 on the road.
?We really played well in the first quarter for the most part, then scored two points in the second quarter and lost some intensity,? Washington head coach Jay Zieglowsky said. ?Then we were trying to play catch-up. We had it for a little while, but we didn?t put 32 minutes of basketball together.?
That goal of playing for 32 minutes is something that Zieglowsky hopes isn?t far off for his team, which fell to 4-12 after the loss.
?We have the ability, we just have to put it together,? he said. ?Until we play a 32-minute game we won?t be truly effective.?
Leading the Demons was Morgan Kimball, who scored a team-high 12 points for Washington, eight of those coming in the paint, three steals and two assists, all while battling an illness.
?She still wasn?t 100 percent last night and she worked her tail off,? Zieglowsky said. ?She was attacking the glass offensively and moving her feet, and being a force defensively. She got a few easy layups and we were getting steals and pushing the ball down the court. I can?t give her enough credit for what she did, and I know she wasn?t anywhere near 100 percent last night.?
The Demons also picked up 12 rebounds from Addie Pacha on the night.
Next up for Washington is a home clash with Keokuk during the Slam Dunk Cancer event, and the Demons are hoping to avenge a 40-30 road loss they suffered on the road earlier this season.
?They are very aggressive and we traditionally play very well against Keokuk,? Zieglowsky said. ?They play man-to-man and are all over the place. We have to keep our composure and handle the press. We want to take advantage of their over-aggressive defensive mindset.?
The boys?-girls? double header is set for a tipoff of 6:15 p.m.
