Four area football players receive all-state accolades

Four area football players, each of whom helped their teams reach the state playoffs this season, received all-state honors when the Iowa Newspaper Association released its all-state football teams today.

Washington inside linebacker Garrett Covington was selected to the Class 3A second team after leading a swarming Demon defense that allowed just 12.5 points and 186 yards per game with 119 total tackles. The physical junior also made 11 tackles for loss, including a pair of quarterback sacks, for a Washington squad that finished a surprising 7-4 this fall and reached the second round of the playoffs.

After nailing seven of his 11 field goal attempts this season, including a 58-yarder that was the longest in school history and the third-longest in state history, Mid-Prairie kicker Austin Errthum was selected to the Class 2A second team. On top of that, the junior was a very steady 30-for-32 on PAT kicks for a Golden Hawk team that finished 8-3 this season. Errthum earned third team all-state honors last fall.

WACO offensive lineman Skyler Miller was selected to the Class A second team after paving the way for 36 Warrior rushing touchdowns during his senior season, where WACO finished 6-4.

Highland senior Cameron Vinsand was one of the best punters in the state this season. His 43.9 yards per boot led Class A and ranked fourth in the entire state during Highland?s 6-4 season. For his efforts, Vinsand earned his second all-state nod as he was selected to the Class A third team.
