The WACO boys? track and field team is a young squad with a few good leaders and a lot of potential.
A number of the athletes from last season return, including four seniors. Coach Shannon Rugg is looking at those athletes to lead the team, helping the underclassmen step up to give WACO a good season.
There are eight Warriors who are back on the track this season: Christian Roth, Justin Freyenberger, Kendall Leichty, Alan Heseltine, Kevin Anderson, Klinton Garett, Tyler Ayers and Dylan Carlson.
?We will have good leadership with our four seniors,? Rugg said, referring to Roth, Freyenberger, Leichty and Hesseltine.
?We will be strong in hurdle events with Christian Roth and Justin Freyenberger,? Rugg said. ?Kendall Leichty in shot will have a good year for us. He and Kevin Anderson will be the two (athletes) in the field events that get us off to a good start in all our track meets this year.?
But the upperclassmen can?t carry the whole team: they will need the younger athletes to hold up their end as well.
?We will need some younger kids to step up and have big year in order for us to have a good year,? Rugg said.
Some of those newcomers that are expected to play key roles are freshman Brett Hesseltine and juniors Garret Kovgard and Skyler Miller.
?We are a very young team that will have a chance to be at the middle to top of most meets,? Rugg said.
