Fairfield wrestlers Michael Fritz, Trenton Hanen and Brendon Lunsford placed at the Bob Lueder Tournament in Clinton on Saturday.
As a team, Fairfield placed 14th out of 23 teams.
?I was really pleased that six out of our nine wrestlers scored points for the team,? said Trojan head coach Steve Miller. ?We doubled our team-point performance from last year and the year before so we really stepped up.?
At 195, Fritz won 3 of 4 matches, placing second.
?The kid Michael wrestled for the championship (Sam Moore, of Mt. Vernon) is a very tough opponent,? Miller said.
?Michael made a minor mistake that Sam was able to capitalize on, and I expect Michael to win the next time they face.?
At 220, Hanen won 3 of 5 matches.
?Trenton performed very well in a tough weight class,? Miller said. ?He got pinned by a kid in the second round and then came back and faced that same kid in the placing round and only lost by four points. In just a matter of a few hours, Trenton had closed the gap and improved. That?s exactly what we want to see from all our wrestlers.?
At the heavyweight class, Lunsford won 3 of 5 matches, and placed sixth after losing a close 5-2 decision to No. 3-ranked Ian Kuehl, of Lena-Winslow, Illinois.
Lunsford received two individual awards.
Lunsford was awarded ?Fastest Pin Award,? recording a fall in 15 seconds.
Lunsford also earned ?Most Pins in the Least Amount of Time? honors. His three pins totaled a combined two minutes and 24 seconds.
?Brendon is starting to be a lot more aggressive,? Miller said.
?And that aggressiveness is equating to a lot more consistency from Brendon.?
