One big inning in each game of Monday?s doubleheader proved to be the difference for Fort Madison as it picked up a Southeast Conference sweep of Fairfield.
The Bloodhounds scored six runs on seven hits in the top of the fifth to win game one 9-7. They then used four straight two-out errors by the Trojans to score six in the top of the second and went on to win the nightcap 9-6.
?We just aren?t a strong enough team in any part of the game ? pitching, defense, offense,? said Fairfield head coach Bob Bradfield. ?When everything is working together, we have a chance to win, but it?s tough to do that against a strong hitting team.?
Brittany Craff, Mackenzie McClure and Taylor Neil all came up with RBI hits in the first inning of game one to take an early 4-0 lead and Haley Grunwald was cruising until running into trouble in the fifth. Opposing pitcher Marissa Basham drove in two to get the fifth inning started for Fort Madison, and, as five straight Bloodhounds reached base, Fort Madison took an 8-5 lead Fairfield would never match.
Katie Anderson drove in Sydney Burnett one inning later to close the gap to 8-7, but Basham shut things down over the final two innings to seal the win.
In the nightcap, Fort Madison had its big inning early scoring four unearned runs as part of a six-run second. The Trojans committed four errors in the inning and had a total of seven on the game.
After going 2-4 in game one, Neil stayed hot to go 2-4 in game two while McClure was 1-3 with a double and two RBI. McClure surrendered just eight hits while striking out three and allowing four earned runs while taking the loss.
After playing on six straight nights last week, the Trojans have three doubleheaders in four days this week and will next play Cardinal at home Wednesday night. The twinbill will start at 5:30 p.m.
