Girls b-ball roundup: Comets, Huskies pick up wins

Monday’s girls basketball slate wasn’t completely jam-packed, but a few teams did get up and running on a non-conference day of action.
Cardinal and Highland scooped up wins one day before conference play was set to heat up.
Cardinal 48, Van Buren County 41
The Comets used a 17-5 run in the second quarter to take down the rival Warriors by seven points in a non-conference battle.
The two teams were tied 8-8 after one period. Cardinal led 25-13 at halftime and 36-30 after three periods.
It was Cardinal’s first win over Van Buren County in girls basketball since the 2016 season.
Desite the loss, Van Buren County’s Marlee Mertens scored 13 points. Ivy Davidson finished the night with 11 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Highland 39, Belle Plaine 18
The Huskies won their third game in a row to start the season, blasting Belle Plaine by 21 points in Riverside.
Highland led 14-7 after one quarter, 24-12 at halftime and 27-16 at the end of three quarters.
Sarah Burton scored 13 points to lead the Huskies. Stella Slaymaker, Hailey Brun and Katelyn Thomann all had six.
Holy Trinity Catholic 62, WACO 31
The Warriors couldn’t hold off a tough Holy Trinity Catholic team, falling by 31 in their home opener.
Freshman Brenna Graber scored 10 points off the bench to lead the Warriors. Emma Wagler scored nine. points, and Naomi Egli put up five.
