Girls basketball: Columbus picks up third win

Hillcrest Academy (2-2) 57, Morningstar Academy (0-1) 31
Hillcrest Academy got back to .500 with a big win over Morningstar Academy on Saturday.
The Ravens gave up just eight points in the first half, while scoring 40 themselves.
The Mustangs outscored the Ravens 31-17 in the second half, but the Hillcrest lead was great enough.
Claire Withrow scored a team-high 22 for the Ravens. Malia Yoder followed with 16 and Delaney Shaw had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
WACO (1-2) 63, Wapello (2-2) 46
WACO got itself in the win column on Friday with a victory over Wapello.
The Warriors and Arrows were tied at 15-15 after the first and then a 15-9 second quarter gave WACO a 30-24 advantage at the half.
Wapello answered back in the third to pull within two, 40-38, but the Warriors ended strong with a 23-8 final period.
Emma Wagler finished with 19 points for WACO. Ella Huisenga had 16 and Naomi Egli carded 11.
Mid-Prairie (2-1) 69, Anamosa (0-2) 30
Mid-Prairie picked up its second victory of the season on Friday.
The Golden Hawks led by 10 after two quarters, 28-18, but finished strong topping the Blue Raiders 41-12 in the second half.
Brooklyn Schneider finished with 13 points in the win. Jovi Evans and Nora Pennington each had 10 points.
Pekin (2-2) 51, Winfield-Mt. Union (2-3) 40
Pekin and WMU were knotted at 10-10 after the first quarter on Friday, but the Panthers opened the game up with a 15-5 second period for a 25-15 halftime lead.
from then on out it was a close one, but the Panthers just edged the Wolves 26-25 in the second half.
Anna Hadley led Pekin with a double-double tallying 25 points and 17 rebounds. Abby Guise and Alex Parsons both dropped in 10 points.
Madisen Kellogg had 20 for the Wolves, followed by seven from Suttyn Schlee and five from Kaelyn Townsley.
Columbus (3-1) 44, Louisa-Muscatine (2-2) 22
Columbus grabbed win number three on the season Friday with a victory against Louisa-Mucatine.
The Wildcats led 31-10 at the half and then 42-15 after the third. The Falcons took the fourth 7-2, but it wouldn’t be enough.
Ariana Vergara finished with 20 points for Columbus. Lily Coil had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Frannie Sosa followed with four points.
Cardinal (2-1) 46, Moravia (0-3) 31
Cardinal got back above .500 on Saturday with a win over Moravia.
The Comets trailed after one, 9-6, but they went on to outscored the Mohawks 13-6, 11-8 and 16-8 in the next three quarters.
Notre Dame (2-0) 55, Van Buren County (1-2) 32
Van Buren County couldn’t keep up with Notre Dame on Friday.
The Warriors were outscored 27-12 in the first half and then 28-20 in the second.
Ivy Davison finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Sophia Jirak had six and Addison Brauns five.
Lone Tree (4-1) 46, Highland (4-1) 22
Highland suffered its first loss of the season on Friday against Lone Tree.
The Huskies led after the first 8-7, but were outscored 39-14 the rest of the contest.
Sarah Burton finished with 11 points for Highland, while Kylie Allen had four and Katelyn Thomann three.
Central Lee (1-2) 43, New London (0-4) 29
New London is still looking for its first win of the season after suffering a loss to Central Lee on Friday.
It was a tightly contest game through the opening half. Central Lee led the Tigers by just two at the break, 18-16. However, the Hawks went on to top the Tigers in the third 16-6 and 9-7 in the fourth to pull away.
Mylee Miller led the Tigers with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Sophie Malott ended with eight points and Morgan Jones had two.
Iowa Valley (1-3) 41, Keota (0-5) 37
Keota was ever so close to its first win of the season on Friday.
The Eagles trailed by just three at the half, 20-17, and then four after three, 30-26.
Keota fought to the end, but the two squads tied in the fourth, 11-11, as Iowa Valley pulled out the win.
Kimberly Clarahan and Grace Conger both finished with 11 points for Keota. Emily Conger followed the pair with 10.
Knoxville (1-2) 68, Cardinal (1-1) 28
Cardinal suffered its first loss of the year on Friday against Knoxville.
Cardinal scored just six points in the first half and all six came in the second quarter.
Knoxville led 42-6 at the half. Cardinal was just edged in the second half, 26-22.
Emma Becker had 10 points for Cardinal, followed by Alexis Bissell with nine and Kaylin Hissem six.
Northeast (3-0) 59, Mid-Prairie (2-2) 43
Mid-Prairie suffered loss number two on Saturday in its matchup with Northeast.
The Golden Hawks trailed by just seven after two quarters of action, but the Rebels outscored them 34-25 over the following two quarters.
Jovi Evans and Brooklyn Schneider scored 10 each for the Golden Hawks. Callie Huber followed with nine points.
