Girls basketball: First-round recap

Mid-Prairie 67, PCM 49
Mid-Prairie opened Class 3A Region 8 play with a win on Saturday.
The Golden Hawks downed the Mustangs after leading 38-29 after two quarters of action and outscoring PCM 29-20 in the second half.
Mid-Prairie will take on Vinton-Shellsburg (15-7) in round two.
Highland 37, English Valleys 33
Highland edged English Valleys on Thursday for a first-round victory in the Class 1A Region 3 bracket.
The Huskies led 10-4 after one and 13-10 at the half. After three, Highland led 24-17 and the Huskies were able to hold the lead after a 16-13 fourth by the Bears.
Katelyn Waters led the Huskies with 14 points in the win. Sarah Burton finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. Katie Herrig had seven.
Highland will take on Springville (18-4) in the quarterfinal round.
Van Buren County 44, Louisa-Muscatine 36
Van Buren County moved on in the Class 2A Region 6 bracket with a victory over the Falcons on Saturday.
The Warriors outscored the Falcons in three of four quarters, 13-7 in the first, 15-11 in the second and 12-6 in the fourth.
Van Buren trailed 19-15 at the break, but outscored the Falcons 27-17 in the second half.
Van Buren will take on Mediapolis (18-3) in the second round.
Burlington Notre Dame 68, New London 30
New London’s season came to a close on Thursday as the Tigers were defeated by Notre Dame in the first round of the Class 1A Region 8 playoff.
The Nikes led 22-3 after one, 46-10 at the half and 60-14 after three. New London took the fourth 16-8, but the Nikes lead was too great.
New London’s season ends at 0-22.
Montezuma 76, Hillcrest Academy 12
Hillcrest Academy was knocked out of the Class 1A Region 3 bracket on Thursday with a loss to Montezuma.
The Ravens trailed 24-6 after one and 46-10 at the half. In the second half, the Bravettes outscored the Ravens 30-2.
Hillcrest Academy’s season ends at 0-20.
Pella Christian 61, Cardinal 35
Cardinal’s season came to an end on Saturday by the hands of Pella Christian.
The Comets were held to just 10 points through the first half, while the Eagles poured in 40.
Cardinal took the second half 25-21, but the deficit was too much.
Cardinal’s season ends at 5-18.
Durant 70, Pekin 33
Pekin was knocked out of the Class 2A Region 6 playoff on Saturday with a loss to Durant.
The Panthers were outscored 20-8, 17-8, 16-13 and 17-4 on the night.
Pekin ends it season at 4-18.
