Girls' basketball heats up with Pekin, Cardinal, Van Buren all in action

Pekin wins over Lone Tree

Pekin took down Lone Tree 61-56 Tuesday.

Beth Atwood led the Panthers with 22 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Point guard Gwynne Wright was productive as well, posting 15 points, four rebounds and two steals.

Samantha Wright put in nine points. McKenna Gambell scored eight points and brought down seven rebounds. Madelyn Baker scored seven points and had six boards.

The Panthers (2-0) play Thursday at Wapello.

Cardinal falls to 1-2 with loss

The Cardinal girls? basketball team fell to Central Lee 50-34 Tuesday.

The Comets were only able to muster 10 points in the first half and were down for most of the game before Central Lee pulled away in the second half.

Delaney Ridgeway led Cardinal with 16 points and eight rebounds. She has scored double-digit points the last two games. Ridgeway and senior Schylar Conger each had two blocks. Jessie McElderry was able to toss in seven points of her own.

?I was glad to see the girls fight back in the third quarter,? coach Aaron Dose said. ?We just did not get key rebounds at certain points of the game.?

Cardinal (1-2) hosts Burlington Notre Dame on Friday.

Warriors take down New London

The Van Buren girls? basketball team won its first game of the season 43-34 Tuesday when it hosted New London.

The Warriors took a 25-9 lead into halftime. Even though they were outscored in both the third and the fourth quarters, Van Buren held on to take the win.

Kaitlyn Johnson made five three-pointers and led the Warriors with 21 points. She also made her presence felt on the defensive end of the court with nine rebounds and two blocks. Abbey Rider, Shayla Filson and Libby King each put in five points. Alicia Fitzsimmons led the girls with 10 rebounds.
