Girls basketball: Mid-Prairie, WACO, Columbus all see success

Mid-Prairie (3-2) 61, West Liberty (1-3) 33
Mid-Prairie blistered by West Liberty on Tuesday. The Golden Hawks outscored the Comets 40-14 through the opening half and never looked back.
Callie Huber finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Jovi Evans ended with 10 points and Morgyn Bender tallied nine for Mid-Prairie.
WACO (2-2) 47, Winfield-Mt. Union (2-4) 29
WACO put together a solid defensive performance on Tuesday to get by Winfield-Mt. Union.
The Warriors led 25-13 at the half and then went on to top the Wolves 22-16 in the second half.
Emma Wagler finished with 14 points, Marie Farmer totaled 13 and Naomi Egli had 10 to pace WACO.
Madisen Kellogg finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds for WMU. Maggie Hutton had three points and Lily Freeman two.
Columbus (4-1) 49, Pekin (2-3) 35
Columbus and Pekin were nearly equal through the first half on Tuesday.
Columbus held just a 7-4 lead after one and a 12-10 advantage at the half. Things changed in the third though as the Wildcats widened their lead to 36-18 after a 24-8 third period.
Pekin bounced back to take the fourth 17-13, but the deficit was too great.
Ariana Vergara led the Wildcats with 16 points. Lily Coil had 15 points and nine rebounds. Aracely Garza followed with nine points.
West Burlington (1-3) 39, Van Buren County (1-3) 30
Van Buren County suffered loss number three on the season after falling to West Burlington on Tuesday.
Ivy Davison led the Warriors with 10 points and seven rebounds. Sophia Jirak ended with eight points and seven boards. Callie Kracht had six points and seven rebounds as well.
Danville (1-4) 71, New London (0-5) 16
New London had a rough start against Danville on Tuesday.
The Tigers scored just five points in the first half, while the Bears dropped in 52 through two quarters.
Danville added on to its total in the second half, taking it 18-11.
Mylee Miller scored seven points for New London. Kayla Strawhacker ended with three and Sophie Malott two.
Lone Tree (5-1) 58, Hillcrest Academy (2-3) 14
Hillcrest Academy never hit double digits in any of the fourth quarters on Tuesday against Lone Tree.
The Lions defense was stifling and that turned into offense as they outscored the Ravens 34-8 in the first half and 24-6 in the second.
Centerville (0-2) 49, Cardinal (2-2) 37
Cardinal came up just short to Centerville on Tuesday.
The Comets were down just three after the first and five at the break, but they could never take the lead.
Centerville won both the third, 12-10, and the fourth, 13-9, to solidify its victory.
English Valleys (4-1) 62, Keota (0-6) 30
Keota is still searching for its first win of the season after falling to English Valleys on Tuesday night.
The Eagles were down just two, 7-5, after the opening period, but the Bears scored a whopping 55 points through the following three quarters.
Keota scored just 25 in the next three periods.
Highland (5-1) 31, Louisa Muscatine (2-3) 21
The Huskies used a 22-pound, 13 rebound outing from Sarah Burton to knock off Louisa-Muscatine by 10 points.
Stella Slaymaker added five points for the Huskies. Kerra Longbine and Makenzie Davis each had two.
