The weekend’s girls basketball action was highlighted by a couple more blowout victories for both Winfield-Mount Union and Mid-Prairie.
Winfield-Mount Union 60, Hillcrest Academy 15
It was all WMU in a matchup between a pair of Union area teams in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division.
WMU was led by a 14-point night from Bradie Buffington and a big night for Melina Oepping, who had 13 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Hillcrest’s Esther Hughes scored 10.
English Valleys 49, Highland 44 (OT) (Thursday)
The Huskies nearly knocked off an English Valley team that has dropped just one game all season. Highland led 25-17 at halftime but couldn’t hang on.
Dani Laughlin scored 13 points for the Huskies. Abbi Stransky had 11.
Mid-Prairie 65, Anamosa 20
The Golden Hawks ripped up Anamosa at home by 25 points to move to 6-4 on the year.
Amara Jones filled the stat sheet with 20 points, six rebounds and six steals. Maddie Nonnenmann scored 20 points of her own.
HLV 36, Keota 32
Despite holding a 23-21 lead after three periods, Keota couldn’t pick up a South Iowa Cedar League road win at HLV.
The Golden Eagles are now 3-10 overall and 3-6 in SICL play.
Sigourney 44, Pekin 28 (Saturday)
The Panthers lost a non-conference home game on Saturday, their first action back since upsetting Highland four days prior.
Pekin’s originally scheduled SEISC North game against Lone Tree on Friday was postponed.
Mediapolis 67, Columbus 23
The Wildcats trailed just 14-12 against the unbeaten Bullettes after one period but Mediapolis held Columbus to just 11 more points all night.
Sera Vela scored six points to lead Columbus.
Holy Trinity Catholic 70, New London 23
The Tigers couldn’t slow down a potent HTC team in an SEISC South home game.
Natalie Burden had a nice game despite the loss, going for nine points and nine rebounds.
West Burlington 58, Van Buren County 33
The Warriors couldn’t slow down West Burlington star Abbey Bence, who scored 32 points to lead the Falcons to victory.
Zoe Best went 5-for-5 with 12 points, five rebounds and two steals to lead the Warriors.
Central Lee 58, Cardinal 28
The Comets were doomed from the tip as Central Lee was red-hot in the first half in a SEISC South showdown.
Cardinal trailed 20-2 after one quarter and 50-18 at halftime. The Comets played the Hawks within one point over the last two periods.
Notre Dame 67, WACO 30
The Warriors showed promise early, leading the unbeaten Nikes 10-9 after one period. Notre Dame, however, would outscore WACO 58-20 over the last three periods.
Ellah Kissell scored 11 points to pace the Warriors.
