Girls basketball roundup: Columbus gets opening win

Columbus (1-0) 39, Hillcrest Academy (1-1) 24
Columbus picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday with a 39-24 victory over Hillcrest Academy.
The Wildcats led the Ravens by just one, 11-10, after the first period, but extended that lead to 25-15 at the half with a 14-5 second quarter.
Hillcrest Academy cut it down to seven after outscoring Columbus 6-3 in the third, but the Wildcats took the fourth 11-3 to win it.
Ariana Vergara scored 14 points and grabbed 13 boards in the win for Columbus. Aracely Garza and Frannie Sosa each had eight points.
Lone Tree (2-0) 67, Winfield-Mt. Union (1-1) 26
Winfield-Mt. Union dropped its first game of the season on Tuesday with a loss to Lone Tree.
The Wolves were outscored 36-13 in the first half and 31-13 in the second.
Madisen Kellogg led with 19 points, nine rebounds. Pacey Schlee added three points, three rebounds. Maggie Hutton had two points, four rebounds, two steals before getting hurt. Kaelynn Kellogg had two points, one rebound and two steals. Lyn Townsley and Lily Freeman both had five rebounds each.
No. 11 Calamus-Wheatland (1-0) 57, New London (0-2) 5
New London was outscored 35-3 in the first half against the No. 11 ranked Warriors on Tuesday.
Calamus-Wheatland went on to give up just two more points the rest of the way, while scoring 22 of its own.
Olivia Hester scored all five points for the Tigers.
