Girls basketball roundup: Columbus, Highland win again

Columbus (5-1) 61, WACO (2-3) 43
Columbus led WACO by just four after one quarter on Friday, but the Wildcats went on to edge the Warriors in the following three to pick up win number five.
The Wildcats led 14-10 after one, 27-17 at the half and 42-30 after the third in the win.
Lily Coil scored a team-high 19 points and nine assists for Columbus. Ariana Vergara ended with 17 points and Aracely Garza had nine with eight boards.
Emma Wagler finished with 17 for WACO, followed by Brenna Graber and Halle Shelman with five.
Highland (6-1) 36, Pekin (2-4) 11
Highland grabbed win number six on the season with its win over Pekin on Friday.
The Huskies put together an outstanding defensive effort as well as the Panthers.
Highland hit double digits just once in a quarter. The Huskies outscored the Panthers, 9-4, 8-5, 8-2 and 11-0 in each of the fourth quarters.
Sarah Burton finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds for Highland. Katelyn Thomann followed with nine points and Kylie Allen had five.
Abby Guise led Pekin with five points and 14 rebounds. Chloe Glosser ended with three points and Renae Eubanks had two points and 13 boards.
Mid-Prairie (4-2) 57, West Branch (0-5) 53
Mid-Prairie just edged West Branch on Friday after the Bears nearly made a comeback.
The Golden Hawks held a three-point lead at the half and extended it to 10 after a 23-16 third made it 47-37.
West Branch went on to outscore the Golden Hawks 16-10 in the fourth, but they were able to hang on.
Brooklyn Schneider finished with 17 points for Mid-Prairie. Callie Huber tallied 12 points and 13 rebounds. Morgyn Bender followed with 11 points.
Holy Trinity Catholic (5-0) 68, New London (0-6) 24
New London struggled to finds it offensive rhythm on Friday night against Holy Trinity Catholic.
HTC led 39-12 at the half and went on to outscore the Tigers 29-12 in the second half.
No. 2 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (6-0) 62, Cardinal (2-3) 22
Cardinal had a tough go against No. 2 EBF on Friday night. The Comets were held to just six points in the first half and 16 in the second.
The Rockets led 38-6 at the half and 55-11 after three on their way to the win.
Central Lee (2-3) 45, Van Buren County (1-4) 34
Van Buren County and Central Lee were tied after one, 10-10, but the Hawks finished out the game outscoring the Warriors 35-24.
Marlee Mertens led VBC with 10 points and eight rebounds. Sophia Jirak ended with seven points and Ivy Davison six.
