Girls basketball roundup: Columbus, Mid-Prairie win pair

Columbus (11-3) 43, WACO (6-7) 42
Columbus closed strong on Friday against WACO. The Wildcats trailed 33-31 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North leaders closed with a 12-9 quarter to win it.
Lily Coil led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats. Isabel Rendon ended with nine and Frannie Sosa had seven.
For WACO, Ella Huisenga finished with 13. Emma Wagler finished with 11 and Brenna Graber had eight.
Columbus (12-3) 43, Pekin (5-8) 37
Columbus grabbed another SEISC North win on Saturday against Pekin. Columbus led by just one 24-23 at the half, but went on to outscored the Panthers 19-14 in the second half.
Isabel Rendon finished with 16 points for Columbus. Ariana Vergara had 10 points and Aracely Garza eight.
Anna Hadley and Alex Parsons both finished with seven points for Pekin. Abby Guise followed with six points and 17 rebounds.
Mid-Prairie (7-5) 49, West Liberty (2-10) 42
Mid-Prairie was able to hold of West Liberty on Thursday. The Golden Hawks outscored the Comets 14-12 and 14-8 through the first two quarters to make ti 28-20 at halftime.
West Liberty edged Mid-Prairie 22-21 in the second half, but that wouldn’t be enough.
Jovi Evans led the Golden Hawks with 20 points in the win. Callie Huber finished with 10 and Katelyn Harland had six.
Mid-Prairie (8-5) 62, West Branch (3-12) 53
The Golden Hawks notched back-to-back wins with a victory over West Branch on Friday.
Mid-Prairie led 17-10, 29-27 and 43-39 after the first three quarters. The Golden Hawks finished strong as well, outscoring the Bears 19-14 in the fourth.
Jovi Evans finished with 16 points for Mid-Prairie. Nora Pennington followed with 15 points and Callie Huber had eight.
Van Buren County (5-8) 52, Central Lee (4-9) 43
Van Buren County trailed Central Lee 26-23 on Friday night, but the Warriors dominated the second half scoring 29 between the third and fourth, while holding the Hawks to 17.
Ivy Davison ended with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Sophia Jirak dropped in 12 points and six rebounds. Marlee Mertens followed with 10 points and six rebounds.
Wapello (6-8) 50, Winfield-Mt. Union (4-11) 32
Winfield-Mt. Union came up short to Wapello on Friday. The Arrows outscored the Wolves in three straight quarters, 9-5, 14-4 and 16-7. WMU won the fourth 16-11, but it wasn’t enough.
Madisen Kellogg scored a game-high 21 points, along with nine rebounds for the Wolves. Pacey Schlee finished with nine points and Maggie Hutton tallied two.
Central Lee (4-8) 54, New London (1-13) 16
New London was held to single digits in all four quarters on Thursday night against Central Lee.
The Tigers were outscored 13-6, 16-4, 15-4 and 10-2.
Holy Trinity Catholic (12-1) 65, New London (1-14) 22
New London had a tough go against Holy Trinity Catholic on Friday. The Tigers were outscored by the Crusaders 16-5, 19-8, 20-6 and 10-3 in each of the four quarters.
Davis County (7-7) 55, Cardinal (2-9) 38
Cardinal trailed Davis County just 18-13 at the half on Friday, but the Mustangs 22-8 third period made the biggest difference.
The Comets won the fourth 17-15, but it wasn’t enough.
