Girls basketball roundup: Columbus undefeated, Keota looking for first win

With girls basketball now full speed ahead, Monday brought another night of action for a handful of Union area school.
Just one Union area team picked up a win following the nights actions.
Columbus 43 (2-0), New London 28 (0-4)
New London led Columbus 7-6 after one quarter of play on Monday, but the Wildcats went on to outscore the Tigers 20-5 in the second to head into the half with a 26-12 lead.
The Tigers struggled to score in the third as the Wildcats continued to build on their lead ending the quarter with a 34-16 advantage. New London would outscore Columbus 12-9 in the fourth but it was too late.
Sara Vela led Columbus with 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Ariana Vergara followed with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Frannie Sosa and Miriam Ruvacalba each had four points, while Aracely Garza finished with three.
For New London, Natalie Burden ended with 15 points, two rebounds and four steals. Mylee Miller ended with eight points and 16 rebounds. Sophie Malott added three points and Olivia Hester two.
Holy Trinity Catholic 50 (1-0), WACO 42 (1-1)
Holy Trinity Catholic put together a dominant first half to down WACO on Monday.
The Warriors scored just 12 points in the first half, five in the first and seven in the second. As for the Crusaders, they scored 16 in the first and 12 in the second to take a 28-12 lead into the half.
WACO picked it up in the second half as they outscored Holy Trinity 13-8 and 17-14, but it wasn’t enough in the end.
Ellah Kissell paced the Warriors with 18 points and six rebounds. Grace Coble and Katie Leichty each added eight. Both ended with six rebounds as well. Marie Farmer had six points. Emma Wagler and Halle Shelman each had one.
Louisa-Muscatine 43 (1-1), Keota 39 (0-3)
Keota fell just short of Louisa-Muscatine in their Monday night clash.
The Eagles trailed the Falcons 13-7 after one and 21-15 at the half. Keota was outscored once again in the third, 11-7, but they bounced back in the fourth winning the quarter 16-9.
Time was not on Keota’s side as they came up short of the comeback.
