Girls basketball roundup: Columbus, WACO grab North wins

Friday, Jan. 26
Columbus (14-4) 43, Winfield-Mt. Union (4-13) 37
Columbus was able to slip by Winfield-Mt. Union on Friday. The Wolves led 12-6 after one, but the Wildcats bounced back in the second to tie it at 15-15 at the half.
Columbus kept up the momentum, taking a 29-21 lead into the fourth and although the Wolves edged the Wildcats 16-14 in the final period, it was enough.
Ariana Vergara led Columbus with 14 points. Isabel Rendon ended with 13 and Frannie Sosa 10.
For WMU, Madisen Kellogg finished with 14, Suttyn Schlee nine and Pacey Schlee six.
WACO (8-8) 48, Hillcrest Academy (4-13) 42
WACO put together a big four quarter on Friday night to get by Hillcrest Academy.
The Warriors led the Ravens 21-15 at the half, but an 18-10 third gave Hillcrest the lead heading into the fourth.
WACO went on to top Hillcrest Academy 17-9 in the final period to win it.
Emma Wagler finished with 18 points and 15 rebounds for WACO. Brenna Graber tallied 11 points and Ella Huisenga eight.
Highland (13-4) 54, Wapello (6-12) 22
The highest point total Highland gave up against Wapello on Friday was seven points.
The Huskies outscored the Arrows 10-7, 10-6, 20-4 and 14-5.
Sarah Burton finished with 18 points and 14 rebounds in the win. Mackenzie Davis followed with nine points and Stella Slaymaker eight.
Chariton (13-2) 60, Cardinal (4-10) 27
Cardinal was held below double digit totals in all four quarters on Friday.
The Comets were outscored 20-8, 7-9, 18-3, 15-7 in each period.
Emma Becker led the Comets with 11 points. Ashlynn Patrick followed with five and Kolbi Saner four.
Holy Trinity Catholic (15-1) 56, Van Buren County (5-10) 25
Holy Trinity Catholic was just too much for Van Buren County on Friday.
The Warriors were outscored, 21-12, 6-6, 16-3 and 13-4.
Ivy Davison finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for VBC. Marlee Mertens added eight and Shae Batten four.
Lone Tree (16-1) 50, Pekin (6-10) 30
Pekin did all it could on Friday against Lone Tree, but the Lions were just too good in the second quarter.
The Panthers were down just two after the first, but Lone Tree dropped in 20 points in the second to Pekin’s one, making it 32-11 at the break.
Pekin answered back with an 18-11 third frame, but the Lone Tree lead along with a 7-1 final quarter ended it.
Wilton (7-8) 42, Mid-Prairie (8-7) 41
Mid-Prairie fell to Wilton by the slimist of margins on Friday.
The Golden Hawks and Beavers traded quarters back and forth, with Mid-Prairie taking the first 13-10. The final three quarter ended 10-11, 10-8 and 8-13.
Jovi Evans scored 13 points for Mid-Prairie. Callie Huber ended with nine and Nora Pennington seven.
West Burlington (2-13) 45, New London (1-16) 37
New London watched its first quarter lead slip away against West Burlington on Friday.
The Tigers led 17-6 after one, but the Falcons went on to outscore New London 39-20 the rest of the way.
Saturday, Jan. 27
Keota (4-11) 48, Hillcrest Academy (4-14) 41
Keota grabbed win number four on Saturday with a victory over Hillcrest Academy.
The Eagles won four of the three quarters taking the first three, 14-10, 9-5 and 12-8.
Hillcrest Academy took the final period 18-13, but the Eagles lead was too great.
WACO (9-8) 49, Wapello (6-13) 41
WACO overcame a 17-6 first quarter deficit on Saturday to down Wapello.
The Warriors went on to outscore the Arrows 43-24 the rest of the way.
Brenna Graber finished with 16 points for WACO. Naomi Egli followed with 12 and Emma Wagerl had nine.
Clark County 49, Van Buren County (5-11) 15
Van Buren County was held to just five points in the first half against Clark County on Saturday.
The Indians outscored the Warriors, 16-0, 11-5, 14-4 and 8-6 in each of the four periods.
Shae Batten led the Warriors with seven points. Callie Kracht ended with four and Ivy Davison three.
Lone Tree (17-1) 54, Highland (13-5) 39
Lone Tree continues to keep a firm hold on the Southeast Iowa Super Conference lead with the win over Highland on Saturday.
The Huskies were outscored 15-10, 18-9 and 13-5 in three straight quarters. Highland won the fourth 14-8, but it wasn’t enough.
Sarah Burton finished with 14 points and 17 rebounds. Katie Herrig ended with nine points and Stella Slaymaker had six.
