Girls basketball roundup: Highland, Hillcrest open with win

The girls basketball season is in its early stages and last week just a slew of Union area teams began their seasons.
Highland, Keota and Hillcrest Academy were all in action.
Highland took part in the Four Corners Shootout, along with Keota.
The Huskies defeated the Eagles in the first game of the day by a score of 51-26.
Highland led by just 10 at the half, 23-13, but Highland went on to outscore Keota 28-13 in the second half.
Senior Sarah Burton scored a team-high 18 points for the Huskies. Stella Slaymaker followed with 10 and Emerson Schultz had eight.
In Highland’s second game of the day, the Huskies downed Iowa Valley 44-40.
The Huskies held a big 27-10 lead at the half. In the second half they were outscored 30-17, but the first half lead was just enough to hang on.
Burton led with 18 points once again, followed by Hailey Brun with eight and Kylie Allen with six.
Keota’s followed up the loss to Highland with a loss to Lone Tree, 59-27.
The Eagles scored just 11 points in the first half and 16 in the second against the Lions.
Hillcrest Academy picked up a win in its opening matchup. The Ravens topped Moravia 47-35.
Moravia led 17-11 at the half, but Hillcrest Academy dominated the second. The Ravens went on to outscored the Mohawks 36-14 to take the win.
Claire Withrow led the Ravens with 20 points. Malia Yoder had 14 points and Niva Helmuth had six with 12 rebounds. Delaney Shaw pulled down 15 boards as well.
