Girls basketball roundup: WACO holds on at Hillcrest Academy

WACO 45, Hillcrest Academy 38
WACO was looking like it was going to run away with its Southeast Iowa Super Conference North matchup against Hillcrest Academy on Tuesday; however, the Ravens didn’t go down without a fight.
The Warriors had a hot start, jumping out to a 15-5 lead after one quarter and then built an 18 point lead at the break.
Out of the break, things began to shift in Hillcrest Academy’s favor as the Ravens created a plethora of turnovers off the full-court press.
Hillcrest Academy went on to outscore the 17-8 in the third period to cut it down to a nine point game.
The Ravens got it all the way down to two, but a technical foul killed the Hillcrest Academy momentum.
WACO was able to hold on down the stretch with some solid defense and some clutch free throws.
Brenna Graber led WACO with 15 points. Claire Withrow scored 20 for Hillcrest Academy.
Mid-Prairie 92, Wilton 31
Mid-Prairie stayed perfect with the thrashing of Wilton on Tuesday night. The Golden Hawks scored a whopping 75 points through three quarters.
Callie Huber finished with 18 points and eight rebound. Brooklyn Schneider had 15 points, while Morgyn Bender added 14 points and six boards.
Columbus 54, Winfield-Mt. Union 33
Columbus sustains its Southeast Iowa Super Conference North lead with a victory over Winfield-Mt. Union on Tuesday.
The Wildcats held the Wolves to single digits in each of the first three quarters, leading 16-2, 31-7 and 43-15 at the conclusion of each.
Ariana Vergara finished with 16 points for Columbus. Lily Coil ended with 10 and Isabel Rendon nine.
Highland 67, Wapello 48
Highland picked up win number six on the season with a win over Wapello on Tuesday.
The Huskies outscored the Arrows 13-5, 22-18, 14-12 and 18-13 in each quarter on the night.
Hailey Brun had 22 points for the Huskies. Kamryn Fink followed with 16, while Emersyn Schultz scored 11.
Keota 53, Belle Plaine 14
Keota held Belle Plaine to single digits in all four quarters, leading 26-5 at the half and 38-7 after three.
Lone Tree 64, Pekin 52
Pekin suffered a SEISC North loss to Lone Tree on Tuesday night.
The Lions held a 30-24 lead at the half. Lone Tree followed with a 21-11 third quarter to pull away 51-35.
Pekin outscored Lone Tree 17-13 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough.
Holy Trinity Catholic 44, Van Buren County 41
Van Buren County and Holy Trinity went down to the wire on Tuesday night.
The Warriors led 13-6 after one and then trailed 22-19 at the half. VBC answered back out of the break, outscoring the Crusaders 18-10 to make it 37-32 heading into the fourth.
HTC closed strong though, edging the Warriors 12-4 in the fourth to take the win.
Marlee Mertens finished with 15 points for the Warriors. Sophia Jirak ended with nine and Addison Brauns seven.
Davis County 68, Cardinal 38
Cardinal suffered a defeat by the hands of Davis County on Tuesday.
The Comets were outscored 36-15 through two quarters and 32-23 in the second half.
