Girls basketball roundup: Washington falls at Keokuk
Winning squads include Cardinal, Van Buren, Keota among others

In Tuesday ‘s girls basketball action, Washington was tagged with a Southeast Conference loss, Cardinal blasted New London and a handful of other area teams hung on for victories.
No. 12 Keokuk 63, Washington 22
The 12th-ranked team in Class 4A was too much for the Demons as Keokuk beat Washington for the second time a week apart.
The Chiefs stayed unbeaten in conference play with the victory. Washington is now 1-6 in league play.
Winfield-Mount Union 65, Lone Tree 21
WMU led from start to finish in a dominant road win.
The Wolves had three players hit double digits, as Bradie Buffington poured in 20 points. Keetyn Townsley put up 13, and Keely Malone finished with 10.
Cardinal 59, New London 19
The Comets finished off the season sweep of New London with a dominant outing at home.
Cardinal jumped out to an early lead and never gave the Tigers any breathing room. Cardinal led 21-5 after one quarter, 39-8 at halftime and 52-14.
Louisa-Muscatine 44, Hillcrest Academy 22
The Ravens hung in early against a 10-2 Falcon squad. The game was tied 10-10 after one quarter, but Louisa-Muscatine held Hillcrest to just 12 points the rest of the night.
Esther Hughes scored nine points and pulled down 12 rebounds on the night to lead the Ravens. Malia Yoder and Leah Bontrager each had five, and Kylee Statler scored three.
Mid-Prairie 48, Tipton 43
Mid-Prairie had to hang on in the fourth quarter to avoid the upset, as a furious late rally from Tipton fell short.
Mid-Prairie led 19-12 after one quarter, 33-25 at halftime and 44-33 after three periods, but the Golden Hawks only scored four points in the fourth.
Maddie Nonnenmann went off for 23 points to lead the way. Amara Jones filled the stat sheet with eight points, six assists, six steals and five rebounds, and Nore Pennington scored eight points of her own.
No. 11 Mediapolis 69, Highland 37
The Huskies couldn’t hang with the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division leaders at home. Mediapolis star Hallie Mohr went for 27 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Bullettes to victory.
Highland’s Sarah Burton put up 12 points to lead the Huskies. Abbi Stransky had 10.
Pekin 43, Wapello 23
The Pekin girls stayed hot with a punishing 20-point victory against Wapello, led by another big outing from Kerrigan Pope.
The Panthers’ star post put up 23 points on the night, 14 of which came in the second half. She ended the night with just as many points as Wapello did as a team. Sarah Eubanks chipped in eight.
Van Buren County 39, Holy Trinity Catholic 36
It was a huge day for sophomore Ivy Davidson, who scored nearly half of Van Buren’s points in a SEISC South win over Holy Trinity.
Davidson scored 18, including 10 in the first half and a buzzer-beating shot at the end of the third quarter.
The win came in come-from-behind fashion. Holy Trinity led 11-7 after one quarter and 16-15 at halftime before the Warriors pulled forward in the second half.
Keota 38, Belle Plaine 32
The Eagles held on to a halftime lead to knock off Belle Plaine in a South Iowa Cedar League showdown.
The two teams were tied 8-8 after one quarter, but a 13-6 second gave the Eagles a 21-14 halftime lead, and they would never relinquish it.
