Girls basketball roundup: Winfield takes command, Comets stumble

Winfield-Mt. Union 60, Columbus 31
The Wolves continue their roll into the new year with the win over the Wildcats.
Winfield outscored Columbus 39-10 in the first half, while both teams tied at 21 all in the second.
Bradie Buffington led four Wolves in double figures, finishing with a double-double herself, 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Jobey Malone finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.
For Columbus, Lily Coil ended with 14 points. Sera Vela finished with 12.
Winfield moves to 10-2 on the season, while Columbum drops to 2-9.
No. 7 Notre Dame 78, New London 45
New London had no answer for the seventh rated Nikes Tuesday night.
After one quarter of play, Notre Dame held a 39-11 lead. New London would be outscored 19-10 in the second. The Tigers outscored the Nikes 24-20 in the second half.
The Tigers were led by Emma Nye, who finished with 19 points. Natalie Burden chipped in nine.
New London falls to 0-13.
Central Lee 43, WACO 34
WACO held an early lead against Central Lee Tuesday night, but a big second quarter from the Hawks propelled them to victory.
The Warriors were ahead 7-5 after the first quarter, but a 16-6 second gave the Hawks a 21-13 advantage at the break.
In the second half, WACO kept it close, but couldn’t find a way to pull away. Central Lee outscored WACO by just one point, 22-21 in second half.
Ellah Kissell scored 12 for the Warriors and Grace Coble added nine.
WACO is now 5-5 on the season.
Montezuma 46, Keota 22
Keota kept the game close up until a huge scoring output by Montezuma in the fourth sealed the win.
Keota didn’t score more than seven points in any of the fourth quarters against Montezuma.
The Eagles struggled to score in the first, putting up just one point, but holding the Bravettes to just six. Montezuma won the second 8-7, leading at the half 14-8.
In the third, Keota was outscored 9-7 and trailing 23-15 going into the fourth.
Any hope of making a comeback was halted by the Bravettes as they turned in a 23-7 fourth to pick up the win.
Keota falls to 3-9 with the loss.
Lone Tree 52, Hillcrest Academy 40
Hillcrest went into the second quarter tied with Lone Tree, but a big second quarter helped the Lions pull away.
After a 9-9 first quarter, Lone Tree scored 22 in the second, while holding the Ravens to 12. At the half, Lone Tree led 31-21.
In the second half the scoring output was narrow once again, but Hillcrest could never find a way to pull ahead and Lone Tree held on for the win. The Raven were outscored 21-19 in the second half.
Hillcrest Academy in now 1-9.
Danville 55, Cardinal 39
A slow second quarter cost Cardinal in the matchup with Danville.
The Bears held on to a slim 13-10 lead after one quarter, but used a 15-2 second to gain the edge. Cardinal trailed 28-12 at the half.
Throughout the rest of the contest, the Comets could never lower deficit, as the two teams tied in second half scoring at 27 all.
Allie Cloke finished with 10 for the Comets and Emma Becker added eight.
With the loss, Cardinal moves to 3-8.
West Burlington 58, Van Buren County 33
Van Buren County held on for as long as they could, but a scoreless second quarter and a 24 point third by West Burlington was enough for the Falcons to take the win.
The Warriors were only down by five after one quarter of play, 13-8. In the second, they couldn’t find the offensive rhythm as they lost the quarter 12-0, giving West Burlington a 25-8 lead.
The Falcons took over in the third, nearly matching their first half total by scoring 24 points to Van Buren’s 12.
The Warriors won the fourth 13-9, but the deficit was too great.
Zoe Best led Van Buren County with 12 points. Annabelle Cormier added seven.
Van Buren County drops to 2-7 on the season.
