Girls basketball roundup: WMU wins ranked battle

The 11th-ranked Winfield-Mount Union girls basketball team picked up their most impressive win of the season on Monday night. Highland scored a thrilling victory over Pekin in a Union area clash, and Mid-Prairie won on the road.
No. 11 (1A) Winfield-Mount Union 54, No. 13 (2A) Mediapolis 38
The Lady Wolevs stayed perfect in style, moving to 13-0 with a 16-point win over a Mediapolis team that beat No. 10 (1A) Notre Dame by 17 points just three days prior.
Bradie Buffington had another strong outing, going for 21 points and 10 rebounds. Keetyn Townsley scored 10 points. Keely Malone and Melina Oepping put up eight each, and Josie Nelson scored seven.
Highland 43, Pekin 41
Highland and Pekin battled to the bitter end, but it was the Huskies taht escaped Packwood with a victory.
Pekin led the game 19-12 at halftime, but Highland outscored the Panthers 13-8 in the third and 18-14 in the fourth to win the game by two.
Kylie Allen led Highland with 11 points in the victory. Katie Herrig had nine. Stella Slaymaker scored eight. Katelyn Waters finished with five points and eight assists. Jessica Kraus scored five, and Sarah Burton filled the stat sheet with four points, 13 rebounds, six steals and four blocks.
Mid-Prairie 52, Williamsburg 45
The Golden Hawks had to put together a big close out quarter after Williamsburg turned a 28-14 Mid-Prairie halftime lead into a 32-30 scramble. The Golden Hawks scored 20 points in the fourth to put them away.
Nora Pennington scored 12 points for Mid-Prairie. Landry Pacha had 11 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Amara Jones finished with six points and five assists.
