The Union coverage area doesn’t have a single name on the new girls basketball rankings, sent out by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union just before the weekend, but that doesn’t mean the list won’t turn heads.
A plethora of familiar faces stack the list, which ranks out the Top-15 teams in each of the five classes, including teams from the Southeast Conference, Southeast Iowa Super Conference, Rivery Valley South and South Iowa Cedar League.
The lone SEC team is one that has ravaged the Union area squads all year. SEC-leading Keokuk, which holds a 3-0 record against Union area teams. The Chiefs sit at No. 12 in Class 4A.
Also ranked in Class 4A are the Grinnell Tigers, who will take a No. 6 rating into Tuesday night’s non-conference game at Fairfield.
The Notre Dame Nikes are ranked No. 7 in Class 1A. Notre Dame is 12-0 on the season and 8-0 in the SEISC South, with a shot at going up two games in the division with a win at West Burlington on Tuesday night.
Notre Dame currently has a 7-0 record against Union area teams. The Nikes have played over half their contests against the area.
The top team in the North Division is also in the rankings. Mediapolis, the only team to upend Winfield-Mount Union so far this year, is currently ranked No. 11 in Class 2A.
The River Valley South is laced with ranked teams. Mid-Prairie currently sits fourth in the standings with only rated teams above the Golden Hawks.
Iowa City Regina is ranked No. 9 in Class 2A. West Liberty is ranked No. 9 in Class 3A, and West Branch is ranked No. 15 in Class 2A.
Keota has plenty of talent to sift through in the SICL, with a couple of teams ranked in Class 1A. Conference-leading North Mahaska is ranked No. 8, and Montezuma isn’t far behind, at No. 14.
