It was a tough day for the Washington girls? golf team on Monday, as they took third at their home meet with Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield.
The Demons shot a 195 on the day, finishing behind the Panthers (191) and Trojans (188), dropping their first meet of the season.
?That?s about four or five strokes higher (per golfer) than normal,? Washington girls? golf coach Leonard Kull said. ?I don?t think we?ve experienced that before, but we didn?t stand up to the added pressure of three good teams playing on our home course. Golf is a pretty humbling game, and we had some decisions made that weren?t to our advantage.?
The Demons were led by Sarah Nacos, who carded a 42, tying Fairfield?s Lindsey Repp for meet medalist honors on the day.
Deanna Peiffer shot a 48 for the Demons, while Allison Vogel notched her low round of the season with a 52.
?Allison played outstanding with her low round of the year,? Kull said. ?However, she had a large score on one hole, and it?s almost a mental thing. I?m pleased with the way she?s progressing, but we have one hole that can be a disaster, but that?s part of the maturation process. Everyone is having issues with that, so it?s a team thing.?
Brenna Burlingame and Megan Strabala each notched 53s on the day, while Carly Burlingame carded a 71.
?I hope that we take it as a wake-up call and do a little something different as far as preparation and course management,? Kull said. ?If there is something we aren?t aware of, I hope it comes out in the open so we can discuss it and get the ship righted. I think they should be disappointed but not discouraged. This happens in golf.?
Washington will look to rebound with another home meet on Thursday, when they host Fairfield and Keokuk.
