Girls roundup: Winfield falls, WACO thrives

Central Lee 40, Winfield-Mount Union 38
The Wolves lose their first game of the season on the road against Central Lee.
Winfield was outscored in just two quarters, 9-8 in the first, and 9-7 in the fourth. Both teams scored 10 in the second and the Wolves outscored the Hawks 13-12 in the third.
The Wolves’ Jobey Malone had a game high 16 points. Melina Oepping and Bradie Buffington both added eight a piece. Keetyn Townsley and Keely Malone both chipped in three.
Winfield is now 6-1 on the season.
WACO 48, Cardinal 38
WACO put together a strong performance in their win over Cardinal.
The Warriors outscored the Comets in three out of four quarters 13-7, 16-10, and 16-11. The Comets made a comeback in the third, coming within six points after winning the third 10-4.
Ellah Kissell led the Warriors with 18 points. Grace Coble added 14 and Emma Wagler eight.
For the Comets, Cynthia Albert and Nicoa McClure both finished with 10. McClure also grabbed eight rebounds and Albert five.
Emma Becker finished with nine points, six rebounds, and seven assists.
WACO 47, Keota 35 (Saturday)
Ellah Kissell dominated for the Warriors in their weekend win over Keota.
WACO did most of its damage in the first and third quarters, outscoring the Eagles 19-9 in the first and 15-8 in the third. Keota outscored the Warriors 11-10 in the second and 7-3 in the fourth.
Kissell scored 31 points in the contest. Grace Coble finished with 11. Katie Leichty added three points and Avery Waterhouse had two.
For Keota, Taylor Kindred led the way with 17 points. Macie McDonald and Taylor Garman both finished with five. Grace Conger and Kimberly Clarahan each had three and Nicole Clarahan added two.
WACO moves to 4-2, while Keota is now 2-6.
Keota 33, Tri-County 15
The Eagles held the Trojans to single digits in all four quarters, 7-3, 6-2, 6-3 and 14-5.
Taylor Kindred finished with a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds for the Eagles. Kimberly Clarahan and Grace Conger both added five.
Van Buren County 49, New London 29
The Van Buren County girls basketball team picked up its first win of the season against New London.
The Warriors held the Tigers to below 10 points in all four periods, outscoring New London 14-7, 9-8, 14-6, and 12-8.
Van Buren’s Annabelle Cormier scored 17 points in the win.
Van Buren is now 1-5 on the season, and New London 0-8.
Highland 48, Wapello 37
Highland used a strong first half to pick up a win over Wapello.
The Huskies outscore the Arrows 28-13 in the first half. Wapello bounced back in the second outscoring the Huskies 13-11 and 11-9 in the third and fourth, but Highland never broke.
Highland gets back to .500, with a 3-3 record.
Louisa-Muscatine 40, Pekin 37
The Panthers failed to pick up there first win of the season in a down to the wire finish against Louisa-Muscatine.
Pekin moves to 0-5 on the season.
Mid-Prairie 58, North Cedar 16
Mid-Prairie dominated in the contest, beginning the game with a 26-0 first quarter and allowing just three points in the second.
The Golden Hawks would go on to outscore the Knights 16-13 in the second half securing the victory.
Maddie Nonnenmann led the Golden Hawks with 23 points and six rebounds. Amara Jones finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Maya Nonnenmann chipped in six.
Mid-Prairie is now 3-2 on the season.
Columbus 41, Hillcrest Academy 33
Columbus held Hillcrest to single digit points each of the four quarters. The Wildcats also outscored Hillcrest in three out of the four quarters, 8-6, 11-9 and 16-9 to propel them to victory.
The Ravens won the fourth quarter 9-6.
Libby White finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats. Lily Coil had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Ariana Vergara added six points.
For the Ravens, Esther Hughes scored a game high 20 points. Malia Yoder chipped in six and Norah Yoder five.
Columbus moves to 2-5 on the year.
Hillcrest Academy 64, Rivermont Collegiate 15 (Saturday)
Esther Hughes could do no wrong for the Ravens in their first win of the season.
Hughes scored a game high 39 points on 16 for 20 shooting.
Hillcrest Academy outscored the Lions 35-2 in the first half — allowing no points in the second quarter — and 27-13 in the second half in their dominating victory.
Leah Bontrager finished with 10 for the Ravens and Malia Yoder had nine.
Hillcrest Academy is now 1-6 on the season.
